Fixed the Bennett hatch lift system on 262

Post by dbleil89 »

When I bought my 01 262 the hatch lift system would only work with the engine running. I figured the pump was weak and luckily had a Bennett trim tab set up in the garage attic. Looked up the wiring for hatch lift system on Bennetts web site. I removed the lines needed and adjusted the wires and still no luck unless the motor was running. Did some thinking and realized the spare pump has bigger wire size to it. Decided to run a 10ga designated 12v hot and ground through a relay to power the pump motor. This did the trick. My hatch works as good as my dad's 252 with the screw driving hatch. Motor doesn't need to run and the hatch starts without someone pulling on it while someone pushes rhe switch. Added a fuse and bought a spare relay to have. The green wire from the switch panel still controls the solenoid valves and the 12v hot goes to the blue wire to the pump for when lifting the hatch.

In short the original wires are a little small for the length they run to the dash and back for the amps needed to lift the hatch. Up size the wires to make the pump run and shorten the length to go from the batteries to the pump and it's back to normal operation.

Good job getting creative with a spare Bennett pump not original to the 262. I never liked how slow the hatch raised on these models. But my prior boat was a Fountain which opened lightning fast due to a dedicated pump. We got used to that.
