Dropped a bottle of fuel additive in the tank before a weekend lake trip Friday. Always remove the tamper proof flap before I pour the contents.

This time however, the ring around the top of the bottle that is apart on the aluminum flap came off. Never seen that before, and have been using this stuff for years. It’s in the tank.

So couple of Q’s

Is there a screen on the fuel pick up from the tank to the line before the fuel pump.


If it made it to the filter I would assume it would be caught there.

Any other thoughts on possible blockages or potential issues?

It depends on a filter on the pickup - some do some don't. If it did get sucked up, it would not make it past the anti siphon valve and it could cause a restriction - doubt it could make it to the fuel filter. You should be able to pull the sender out of the tank and get a look inside and possibly retrieve the piece of aluminum. I would give it a 50/50 of ever causing a problem, but if it were me I would at least try to get a look inside the tank and find it -- I would not go to anything extreme.

There's usually access to the fuel tank and fuel pump under a seat - look for a 4" or so big round plug you can unscrew to gain access.

Deja vu, something similar happened to me after Superstorm Sandy years ago. We had a widespread power outage due to the storm in North Jersey, and gas was hard to come by. I realized I had 60 gallons of premium gas sitting in my driveway on a trailer, not the best idea, but gas was really hard to come by, so I decided to siphon out the gas. Well, I got the gas I needed, but a part of the hose slipped into the boat's gas tank as I was pulling it out. I got some great advice from the forum, but mostly it was about accessing the fuel tank from the boat's access panel, and I was able to use a claw to fish it out. One of the funniest comments was " Don't worry about it, the next owner will find it"
