Steering Acuator

Post by Lowrider03 »

Back to trying to figure out why my steering is so hard on my 293 (twin 5.7 Volvo GXi, with DP outdrives). It seems like at slow speed I shouldn't have to use two hands to steer this boat, looking at the motors, both have power steering pumps. I went through the process to bleed both pumps this weekend, with minimal positive results. I know that the steering has to be easier than this.

This boat does have the Volvo PSTG (Power Steering and Trim Group), so I'm asking you guys:
What is your experience with replacing the steering actuator?
How do I take the excessive play out of the steering?

      Thanks!!

I would start by disconnecting the actuators and see if the drives turn freely. You should be able to turn them with little effort by hand.

What about the play in the steering wheel?

Had a chance to unhook the steering cable from the actuator, its was still very hard to turn the wheel. Couple that with slop in the steering wheel and decision is made to replace that before the actuator.

I’m looking at the NFB (No Feed Back) upgrade to the steering system. I already have the PSTG upgrade at the transom; so this appears to be a natural update.

Question for the group, has anyone went with the NFB system? OR, does anyone know the steering cable length?

If you trace the cable to the front there should be a part number on it. Most likely it's a Seastar product but they have been bought out by Dometic. The part numbers are still the same at least 3 years ago they were. I tied a piece of rope on mine and pulled it out so I could order the correct part. Amazon should have them.
