1999 electric compass questions

Hello, I recently purchased a 1999 232. It has an electric compass. When starting up, it swings back and forth and then stops and freezes. I looked at the back and there is a brown wire with a lug that isn't connected to anything. Anyone know where this should go? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
