2019 Cobalt R5 Stuck in Reverse

Hello Cobalt forum!

Did quite a bit of searching online and couldn’t find anything to help diagnose this issue I am facing. Hence the reason for creating a new thread.

Just attempted to take the boat out today (took it out a couple months ago and everything was fine). Engine started up great, but when backing out of my slip the boat shifted into reverse like normal but then was completely stuck in gear. Attempted to go into neutral but the boat was still reversing so I quickly tried forward gear and it was still stuck in reverse. Ultimately I had to turn off the entire engine to get it to stop and guide the boat back into the slip. I also started the engine up 1 more time just to see if it was in neutral but it immediately started reversing on start up.

The engine is a Volvo Penta V8 350. Never had any prior issues in relation to shifting (maybe some slight delays in shifting but barely noticeable).

Any assistance on helping me troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated. I am not too familiar with these engines but assume it is fly by wire. Just having some difficulty physically locating the correct component to look at in the engine bay. Hoping there is something I could try to narrow down the root cause.

I also noticed there are 2 hydraulic lines that are tied into the steering column and 1 of them is actually rubbing on the bracket as you turn left/right with damage to the rubber hydraulic line but not cut through entirely yet. There is a small amount of oil underneath that line when I put my fingers underneath it. Obviously this needs replacing but not sure if it’s related to the main problem.

Any support on this would be greatly appreciated! I will try to post some pictures to add context to the hydraulic line I am referring to above.

Thanks!

Pictures attached. The red circle is where the bracket on the steering column contacts the hydraulic line

Had the same catastrophic failure, though much farther from home.

"(maybe some slight delays in shifting but barely noticeable)" -- and the same problem before the failure.

In my case, it was a bad shifter cable.

Symptom of bad shifter cable: "The boat may remain in gear even after the shifter is placed in neutral, often failing to come out of reverse."

So glad you found us J555.

We had a similar issue on our 263. Replaced the shift cable and good to go. That grease can solidify after a number of years.

Keep us posted.

And welcome aboard mate.

Thanks for the support! I’ll post back when I find the issue and it is fixed!

I didn’t realize it would be a mechanical cable vs fly by wire electrical cable that controls a solenoid for shifting gears.

Just a quick follow up to close this out!

I removed the top cover of the engine and noticed the shift actuator was indeed in the neutral (center) position so I removed the cotter pin holding the shift cable and noticed if moved freely forward and backward with no resistance. After pulling the boat out of the water it ended up being the cotter pin falling out on the outdrive side after the boat was shifted into reverse therefore it was stuck in reverse gear. The technician thinks it may have been corrosion over time that caused it to fall out.

After replacing the cotter pin, everything works great!

It's great when life throws you a $1 fix instead of the $1k fix you're expecting. Glad you got it sorted, and thanks for sharing your solution!

Those cotter pins should be stainless. I wonder who replaced it with a steel pin.
