Trailer for 1999 Cobalt 226

What is the required capacity weight and recommended tire size for a trailer to tow a 1999 Cobalt 226. I know I need a tandem axel trailer, but what is a good weight capacity to have excluding the weight of the trailer. Also are 14 inch tires too small? Will I have issues with flats? I live in Phoenix so the roads are extremely hot. Thanks

I would recommend a 6000lbs gvwr and 14 is fine. I think 215/70r14
I recommend Goodyear endurance tires for replacements. Oh and a Eagle trailer of you get a choice. Mine as well get that out of the way fast.

My .02? Stay far away from torsion suspension, and most of your tire issues will be gone. Just buy the good old spring equalizer suspension that loads each tire with the same weight, no matter if the trailer is level or not. And, replace tires that are five years old.

I agree with AsLan, in your part of the country, buy a Phoenix. I'm sure their dealer network is widespread there.

Exactly, looking at all the great pics of lakes everywhere on this CG I am seriously considering a trailer and and upgraded vehicle. Thought I could’ve happy with my “slip on the lake” but now not so sure.

I guess if you live on a monster high end lake like Lake Norman, there are plenty of options for change up.
I love lake Chautauqua, and the Niagara River, but definitely not into a steady diet of it.

It depends on where you do your boating. I love the California Delta as we have so much to do and visit that its a new experience every week. You can pack nothing and visit all the restaurants and bars you want. Different Bands are everywhere and all accessible by water.

I would trailer if it was limited as some lakes don't even have a gas dock or marina and are limited.

But now that I have you guys.. easy deal to do the drop in .. Who needs a trailer.. Just a plane ticket

You have a great travel set up for sure..foldaway Bimini now and a awesome trailer!!

You can travel south to Cumberland and explore the mid boating lakes that are amazing and that cater to Food, Lodging etc. and everything right on the lake.
You can do a winter Florida Trip (salt water eeeeeek rinse daily) exploration etc. So you have great options on the East Coast !


As our 2 Daughters got older and married and life Changes they had new agendas and day boating started them saying "what time are we getting back??"

So .. Bowriders became offshore boats. Now that we have Grandkids...Bowriders are back

The thing I love about My Grandkids are they never ask :"are we there yet" and I can take them to the same beach and its a new experience every time. Now we take the grandkids out more and leave the Daughters. HAHA much easier!

Thanks Matt, my plan was to buy the largest trailer capable Cobalt that I could handle and just as important, the best built trailer I could buy for long haul travel if we choose.

Now, its about doing it. I really want to go to Lake Norman for a week. Driven by it several times and it looks like a weeks worth of entertainment. I just have to make it happen. My summers are just crazy busy here. I'm training my 23 year old on a crash course of smart buying 101.
