Changing Gear Oil

I'm thinking of adding changing the gear oil to the services I do myself. I don't like the $100 each way charge to have dealer take the boat in to shop.

First question. Volvo Penta transmission fluid calls for 75w-90, 1141679. Spec is API GL5. Best price I've found is $22 a quart at volvopentastore.com.
I've found a Volvo Penta 80w-90 for $8.00 that is 1141676 says spec API GL5 also. I'm wondering if I should spend the extra?

Second question. I need a gear oil pump. Several on the ones on Amazon or Ebay specifically say "Not For Volvo." What are people here using and where can I find it?

Third question: Dual prop wrench. Found this on Amazon:

$22/qt is actually not that bad. However...it's always easier doing it with gallon jugs since you don't have to swap containers.

Make sure you always change all the o-rings on all the plugs at every gear oil change

Krob their are lots of tricks to doing gear oil change. Pm me or Google them. Use the correct oil. I was using other brand oil and the marina scolded me. It was rated correct and I had good luck with it. The lead tech Said only use volvo oil so you don't Have shifting issues. The cheap pump works you just have to modify it slightly by cutting 2 little plastic ears off the part that screws in the drive. Get only OEM orings too and buy extras. Wrap tape on the drain bolt so you don't cut the oring. Ok no need to pm me now

Fortunately, on the later Volvo Penta duprops like you have, they changed the crazy stupid drain bolt. The ones on the earlier DP-SMs were a pain and you needed an adapter to fill the thing. I believe the new ones have standard threads like a Mercruiser.

solid advice all around, and those prop wrenches work just fine. make sure you grease the splines before you put the props back on.

Update: Received Volvo Penta prop wrench. Looks good. The pump I bought was Star Bright. Back of card said it works on Volvo. I did not take prop off this past weekend to look at it because I didn't have grease for splines yet.

What I do is just order a couple gallons at a time. Little cheaper and save on shipping. Interesting its cheaper by the qt from Michiganmotorz though.

Way easier pumping from a gallon bottle so you aren't changing bottles mid stream.

I actually made an additional prop wrench to the Volvo one I had. I welded a 1/2 socket to the top so I could use a torque wrench.

On the older drives with straight splines it was 45 ftlb for the front and 50 ftlb for the rear. Probably still the same and likely not super critical.

You do know to fill from the bottom right?

Yes, thanks. Youtube certified boat mechanic. Probably going to do all maintenance in middle of October.

I haven't thought of that. Do you think it's necessary? We're finishing up third season. Boat had 179 hours when we left Sunday to go home and watch Saints destroy BB's Packers. There doesn't seem to be any vibration, and we've never hit anything.

Is never a bad thing. I put mine off from winter to spring and it cost me a set of ujoints and 1500 bucks.

I pull my drive every year. When I bought my current boat last January, I found the engine/drive way out of alignment. You also want to check for water intrusion into the bellows. Has you drive never been off since you owned it?

I also welded up a drive stand so I do it by myself.

Nice job Bruce. I've seen folks modify the $10 Home Depot furniture dolly as well. The crank for vertical adjustment is nice.
Btw, what's going on with your lab finished props?
