Cobalt vs Sea Ray

Did anybody compare their cobalt to a sea ray 250 SLX when shopping?

Just wondering what people thought of the comparison?

The last sea ray I walked on in the boat show a few years ago was a mess. The fit and finish was terrible. The sticking was real bad and the gel and sealant they used looked terrible. Maybe in the 90s I would think about one but not anymore.

To me, a Sea Ray is just a Bayliner with a little lipstick on it. Many are even made in the same factory

Not even a comparison. A proper comparison to cobalt would be formula. Like Bruce said Sea Rays are often made in the same factory as bay liner. Unless you are looking at a late 90’s Sundancer run away

I would say save your save your money and buy a Bayliner

I havent paid much attention to their build quality but I do like the layout of the SLX models, especially the larger ones. Really big fan of the drop down side platform. Thats a really cool idea.

Nope, I fell in love with cobalt in 1998 when I walk into a dealership just looking. When I got a little older and had kids I bought a Rinker because it was cheap. Then a Malibu because I still thought I was 30. Now that my kids are grown I bought myself a Cobalt. I’ll probably never own another brand.

I know this is an old thread, but figured I would jump in. Priced out a loaded SR 290SDX, which was very close to my current build on an R8 Outboard. No comparison, the Cobalt seems closer Formula quality, and the SR has some cheesy bits and pieces. Plus, I do not love that square bow look on the SDX, you just don't need the room up there. You also can't compare the attention and guidance you get with the Cobalt sales team to the order takers at SR.

I was thinking this exact question when I started looking for boats this Spring and I had settled on either the SLX250 or an R5/R6. SeaRay will not get a fair shake on this forum for sure, but in my research online, more boaters preferred Cobalt.

That being said, what sold me on Cobalt was 19% off MSRP whereas SeaRay was only doing 8% or less. That price was probably more about the dealer than boat brand. Obviously easy decision for me to with Cobalt.

Used prices for the SLX were very comparable to the R5/R6.
