5-8 minutes is the "Get a fresh beer" reminder on our boat.

If it's a Volvo Penta, it could be the dead man's lanyard is disconnected. It's just below the throttle and may have gotten bumped. Ours did the first summer we had it and the annoying beeps every 5 minutes was exactly what happened until I put it back on.

I didn't think the boat would start with the lanyard out. Our previous VP would not start, but it was not a Cobalt.

My 18 R7S would start without the lanyard and beep similar as described above.

Odd then what is the purpose of having it if you fall over board does the boat keep going. They were added to stop the engine.

My R5 won’t start with the lanyard pulled. It just happened to my daughter the last time we were out a couple weeks ago. The engine just cranked and didn’t fire. That was the first thing I looked at and she had tucked her phone in the mesh pocket right below the switch and she unknowingly pulled lanyard out.

If the lanyard doesn’t kill the engine when pulled what good is it?? It’s meant to kill the engine if the driver falls out of the boat.

I can only tell you how it operates in my R5 as I’ve never owned another Cobalt. It will stop the engine if it’s pulled when running but you can start it without the lanyard after putting it in neutral and turning the ignition all the way off. I’ll try it again when I’m up next weekend but I’m 100% positive this is the case because I started it and drove it 4-5 times back in 2018 when the lanyard was on the floor underneath the seat. I called the dealer at the time trying to diagnose the beeping. He informed me it was from the lanyard being disconnected and he was correct.

That's crazy. Then again I've never tried to start mine with it out. Granted I don't think mine has ever been out?

When we just started boating, my wife had cleaned the boat before first trip out on second season. When we got backed down on the ramp, transom in the water, boat wouldn't start. Finally, an experienced boater came over and put our lanyard back in.

Weird, I know for sure that our 2014 R5 will not start with the lanyard pulled. The engine never cranked over, turned the key to start and the engine would not crank. After the second time I bumped the key to start and the boat didn’t turn over I looked down to check the lanyard. It was pulled out of the switch, plugged it back in and the engine fired right up.

That kinda defeats the purpose of having it if the boat will continue to run once the driver has fallen out. The beeping every 5 minutes isn’t going to stop the runaway boat...
