New member from Grand Lake, OK

Post by Grand Lake Bum »

Happy to have found this forum. Can't believe it took this long. I purchased our Cobalt 276 new in 2011 and this July we will have enjoyed almost 12 years of ownership. We have definitely enjoyed the Cobalt brand and the boat still looks amazing after all of these years. Grand Lake has grown busier and busier with each season and the size of the boats has continued to grow. As a result my wife and I recently put a deposit on a new R30. We are excited to own our next Cobalt but because of the craziness that is going on in the boat industry it looks like we will be forced to wait until this fall before we can take delivery. Looking forward to learning from others that have experience with the R30 and what it has to offer.

Great looking boat! When we purchased our R5 there was a new 276 right next to it in the showroom. I liked the 276 better but the price was right on the R5 so that’s what we ended up with. What engine is in your 272?

I apologize for the delayed response. I thought that I had replied previously but apparently I did something wrong. Thanks to all for the comments and welcome! The current 276 is powered with a Volvo Penta 400 and the new R30 is currently scheduled to be built with twin VP 300s although we have not locked our build and I may ultimately opt for 380s. Crazy to me that you pay $15,000 for a software flash to go from 300 to 350. Seems like robbery to me.

what it has to offer...

It will handle rough water extremely well. We have been on TRL for 25 years and the water is more choppy than ever before even during the weekdays in summer.

It will accommodate 10+ people with lots a room to spare.

It still offers a "traditional Cobalt interior" vs a linear squared design that some refer to as a Malibu influence. ( IMHO almost the entire industry has adopted similar interiors for their pleasure boats....see Sea Ray)

I did test drive an R30 with 300's as well as 350's before ordering our 2021. The difference is significant especially on the low end with a big crew and full of fuel and gear.

The R30 is a magnificent boat and you will not regret your decision. We have almost 70 hours on ours and the mechanics and fit-and -finish have...so far... been flawless. Congrats and Cheers!

I appreciate the feedback on the engine package and your impressions of the R30. We have witnessed a significant increase in boat traffic on our lake since the beginning of COVID. My wife did not used to complain about the chop but now doesn't want to go out as often because of the rough ride. I'm pleased to learn about your experience in the R30 on TRL as I understand that you experience similar chop to Grand Lake on a busy weekend. We also prefer the traditional Cobalt interior to the new linear squared design. Looking forward to the new boat when it arrives - hard to imagine that we must miss this season because of production delays.
