Volvo Penta ECU

Post by Arabian67 »

Hello all, just wanted to get the word out about potential problems everyone might experience! I own a 2007 272 with a 8.1 VP that has a bad ECU board . The boat has been down since last summer with no news on the horizon. Cobalt blames VP for not having parts available which might be true but i bought the boat from Cobalt and they should stand behind their boats.I have tried every route i know to get this part , first sent it down to texas to have it rebuilt - it couldn't be repaired , i've called Cobalt dealerships from Maine to Maryland no luck , E Bay and all Cobalt boat used parts that i know of. I have owned 4 Cobalts with no issues at all until this one. The notion that Cobalt as a company cant get their supplier parts for their boats is not acceptable in my book . If anyone has an ideas on my problem please feel free to reach out to me! I think i will just start calling Cobalt everyday and voice my problem until it really gets heard. Right now i have a beautiful 50K boat sitting on a trailer collecting dust!
FYI original part number is 3817805 which they have said might of changed to
3885465 ,3885461 and 3889007 .

Honestly this is what 13 years old. No manufacture has to supply parts for that long much less for 7 years.
Is a volvo supplied part not cobalt.
Go bother volvo no cobalt.
Also sorry for your issues your having. It isn't too often you see a ecu failure so I praise volvo and mercury for that 👍

Yeah, this is on Volvo. If something breaks your first year with the engine/ecu, Volvo fixes it. On a boat that age, your options are really to find a used one or find someone who thinks they can repair Volvo ECUs (I wonder if these guys can help? https://obd2allinone.com/mefituning.asp).

Yes 8.1 gxi-h ser # 4012218738 . The boat only has 344 hours on it as its up in NH were we get 4 months of use per year. I understand thats impossible to keep parts readily available on boats over 7 years but computer module that runs the boat should be still available - ablank ECU should be flashed to run my boat.

Post pictures of all of your numbers of the ecu.
I'm sure it's just a mefi 4 ecu.
I had this company tweak my ecu
https://obd2allinone.com/mefiecms.asp

I have a ecu for you for 50k otherwise!
It even comes with the engine 👍

I'm pretty sure that by 2007 Volvo had moved on to their proprietary controller, BBP.

Arabian, I don't know how handy you are, but at this point, if it were my boat, I'd be converting to a different controller. I'm certain that a megasquirt could be setup to work as well as many other of the shelf controllers - the hardest part is just getting the wiring harness setup and then doing the fine tuning. When it was done, you'd have an engine that you had a lot more control of and would be easier to maintain.. not to mention being able to squeeze a few more horses out of it

I wonder if some shop like this guy's could take a crack at your old one? Id' probably still call the company BBP linked first...

you guys have a good point, one its just electronics you just need to find out what actually happened - is it as simple as a burnt resistor? Second to replace with a common aftermarket injection system would open up endless possibilities.... and more than likely a third of the cost..

Do any of the aftermarkets offer injection systems for the GM LT series engines yet? Im seeing 400hp with my boat and zero drawbacks.

AEM sells an adapter harness that allows you to plug in a MEFI based computer directly to their Infinity controller:

https://www.aemelectronics.com/products ... 3-infinity

But, like I postulated earlier, I don't think the boat in question is using MEFI... I think it's a proprietary Volvo computer. Which just means that you would need to adapt the harness yourself. Far from impossible.. just tedious if you're not used to playing with small wires. All you'd need is the controller and a wiring schematic for your engine. And then the tuning fun would begin!
