Garmin for 220S dash?

Post by VintageRacer »

Is there a stock unit like a Garmin or something that would fit the opening in my dash on my 2015 220S? Just wondering what options there is for an inexpensive sonar or map device that fits and looks good? Thoughts?

Do you have a picture of what's there now? I have a 210, which isn't much help, but the good news is that most GPS manufacturers including Garmin are pretty good about keeping a steady supply of new models that fit in the same openings as old models.

I also have a 2015 Cobalt 220s WSS and this weekend installed a Simrad GO5 XSE Fishfinder/Chartplotter Combo with Active Imaging 3-In-1 Transducer and C-MAP Pro Charts.

Background: Back in 2015, when our 220s’ were new, there was a factory option to add a flush dashboard mounted Garmin 640 GPS (to the right of the steering wheel – replacing the plastic/aluminum storage insert). The Garmin’s dimensions were 5.9"W x 4"H x 1.9"D. However, these units are no longer made. After lots of research I decided to go with the Simrad GO5 XSE (also replacing the storage insert). The dimensions are a similar 5.98”W x 4.72”H x 2.28”D.

Overall, it was a clean install (the aluminum took time to cut and shape). However, I did not install the 3-In-1 transducer. The friend of mine (a marine electronics expert) who helped me install the Simrad recommends instead installing a second through-hull transducer on the port side – adjacent to the existing starboard through-hull transducer (that reads digital dash depth). He is concerned that the 220s transom angles, along with the dual prop, will cause transducer interference. The 3-In-1 transducer offers CHIRP, DownScan and FishReveal; as a result, is rather large. However, I’m hesitant to spend more money on another transducer. I plan to ask this question in the Electronics topic section (unless someone here can advise).

I hope this helps and welcome further questions!

I'd really like to know what you ended up doing with the transducer installation. Adding a GPS fishfinder combo is something I would like to do, soon.

Sorry for my late reply (I should really log in more often to cobaltchat). I ended up going with the Simrad Navico B60-20 20° Tilted Element through-hull transducer. It's a clean install and I prefer bronze vs. plastic.

Here is a photo of the added through-hull transducer. The entire setup works very well.

Anyone have any recommendations for my 2017 Cobalt 220S. It is a tight fit so needs to be something smaller. THanks in advance!
