220s Trim Tabs - Anyone have them?

Post by Donk80 »

Hello fellow Cobalt Owners. Purchased a 2020 220s a month or so ago and love the boat. Ride is pretty solid even in the chop we get on Lake Lanier here in GA. That being said, I have always found that trim tabs assist with both chop/rough water slap and leveling the boat when passengers are loaded heavy on one side. Does anyone have trim tabs on their 220s? If so, how do they perform, would you recommend them, and do you have pictures of the location? They are not offered as an option on the Cobalt website and the local Cobalt dealer doesn't seem to that enthusiastic about assisting Cobalt owners who didn't buy their boat directly from them. Thanks in advance for any advice.

So glad you found us D80.

We have enjoyed our trim tabs on the 262 and 263 and have used them for the reasons you mentioned. Some 220 owners will chime in shortly.

Any pics of your 220s?

And welcome aboard mate!

AsLan7,

Thanks for the warm welcome and glad I found you guys as well. I've tried attaching a picture but I haven't been successful as of yet. The color scheme on the boat is exactly as we would have ordered it minus the tan trim on the interior (would have gone with the Gray trim).

It has a Blue Hull, Red Stripe and White bottom. My family and I are big Atlanta Braves fans and the boat looks like it was made for it. Thanks again and look forward to hearing from other 220s owners soon. I have a local shop setup to install a new Sub, amp, 2nd battery and underwater lights on the 18th of this month and would love to do the trim tabs at the same time if I can determine it's worth it.

Yea wouldn't think you would really need them. I get it people on one side. What about just putting smart tabs on it? Which ones were you thinking about?

I was thinking about using either the 4x12 or 9x12 tabs in either Bennett or Lenco. The boat gets on plane quicker and easier than any other boat I’ve ever owned. And the ride is pretty much bow down with the way the hull is designed. That being said, the majority of adults hang out in the rear and the kids go up front which does cause both bow rise and uneven ride while underway. If I could tweak those to ride issues with an $1k or so I’d be happy with the purchase. Lake Lanier is a big water lake and every bit of ride quality you can get out of boat is worth the extra $$ in my opinion. I thought about moving up to an R3 but didn’t want to pay $40k more. I also like how the 220s sits closer to the water for wakeboarding and other water based activities.

Got ya! A 222 is another Option that is much cheaper than a r3.
But a much different ride from a 220. I thought it was boring.

I don't have a 220, but I wouldn't own a boat without trim tabs for all the reasons you mentioned.

These newer series 220s are very close to the water. For that reason and the seating arrangement is the reason I won't upgrade to one. Mine is a bit more off the water and still has the sporty feeling.
