My 262BR Starter dead
My 262BR Starter dead
Any suggestions. Boat has been starting fine until the other day. It was hesitant and then spun over normal and started. - couple days later I went to start boat and nothing. I figured batteries were getting weak so I tested. Batteries are fine so I took starter off and had it checked at local battery shop. They said it was bad so I replaced with new starter and I am still having same issue.
Everything works, radio, gauges, lights, horn, etc.
90 amp Starter fuse has fire on both sides.
Checked 50amp and 20 amp circuit breakers and they seem fine.
Checked to make sure it’s in neutral.
Kill switch is in correct position.
I had just replaced circuit breaker under the dash from a previous issue and it seems fine with fire on both sides.
Fire leaves ignition switch when I turn key.
When I turn the key everything fires but the starter. Not a click, spin or anything.

Re: My 262BR Starter dead
.
Sorry to hear about your starting woes 2004BR262.
If I remember correctly, you had electrical issues in the past but I believe this was at the helm and fixed via a new 90 amp fuse.
Whenever we had a starting issue with our 262 or 263 it was mainly due to a loose battery connection. Make sure there is no corrosion and be sure to tighten completely the leads to the terminals using a half inch wrench. Many times the leads appear tight but they're not. Those 496 big blocks draw a lot of current to start and need a healthy connection to do so.
Would you be able to post a pic? Love the 262.
.....and officially, welcome aboard mate!

What did the batteries read when you tested them? How old are they?
And thanks for the pic!

12.93 and 13.01. They are 18 mths old. I’ve cleaned every connection with a wire brush and even change out the 20 amp ignition circuit breaker again and still not a peep from the starter. Everything else is working fine.

Do you have a good ground?
Check the brass grounding buss on the transom. Specifically the large yellow wire. Make sure it’s tight.

Re: My 262BR Starter dead
Checked and they are all tight. I also traced the ground from the battery to the back of the bell housing and it’s also tight. It’s wearing me out.
Re: My 262BR Starter dead
Good news it’s running. Bad news I have no idea what fixed it. Cleaned and unplugged every connection and it started. Stay tuned!

Re: My 262BR Starter dead
Well that’s great to hear and concerting all at the same time. It really sounds like a loose connection somewhere (or your throttle center is very sensitive as the gateway for the starter solenoid to engage). . Keep us apprised.

That is the most frustrating kind of repair fix... I would look carefully at the neutral safety and lanyard circuit just to double-check your fix.
Also, it looks like your boat is far back on that trailer, or maybe it's an optical illusion.

Yeah the trailer has runners but it could have been a little longer. I’ve made an appointment with dealer to check for codes. Now it cold starts fine in the morning but has a 2 beep alarm but it won’t cold crank in the 100* afternoon temps. It seems something is getting warm? Hopefully dealer can point me in the right direction. I’m at a loss.

keep us posted buddy. They will be able to read the error codes as well to help diagnose.

Re: My 262BR Starter dead
So the verdict was TPC on the throttle body. Replaced it and no more problems.

Congratulations on finding the cause. The intermittent problems are the worst.
