Fuel gauge accuracy

Post by AsLan7 »

.
Well, I can attest to the fuel gauge accuracy of our 263. The needle was close to the "E" mark since I had wanted to run most of the gas out of her for the last few days.

Filled her up at the station with 93 Octane. $3.199 per gallon and she took 60 gallons-- meaning she only had 10 gallons left in the tank before the great fill up.

We had a bonus of 30 gallons of free gas due to our recent grocery spending. So that was $95.97 worth of fuel. Then I started the pump again and put in another 29.4 gallons which amounted to $94.01. Total bill...$189.98....plus the bottle of Stabil and Ethanol treatment for the winter storage. Actually, not too bad a bill considering gas prices used to be double that at one time. ....and I always say, if you can't afford the gas, then you can't afford the boat. 8-)

I’d say my gauge is accurate.... to about 1/2 tank. 🤣. I’ve never let it go lower than that. I’m a little paranoid when it comes to running out of gas, so I’ve never let it run way down.

I like to leave mine low so I can fill up with fresh gas in the spring. Since the plastic tanks that is. Metal tanks yep fill them.
Yes my guage on this boat is pretty accurate. The speedo is dead on also.

Interesting on plastic tanks.. but it makes sense if the theory is less metal causing dew build up??

I usually keep mine full during days of winter as I thought vented fuel systems pull moisture.
We keep our boats on the hoist until January usually ..maybe I won't worry as much now

Yeah, doesn’t matter with plastic. Storing with ethanol free or ethanol treatment in the fuel is a plus. Ethanol is a corrosive. My last run, I filled it up with 91 EF, and add in a bottle of Stabil and went boating. I probably have a 60 gallons left in the tank for storage.

I'm with ya, T. Part of our sea trials is knowing everything is working correctly. Now that we know the gauge / sender is accurate, We will always keep 1/2 a tank or more when going out on future outings.

I fill'er up as a habit with everything I own. Stabil in the tank if its going to be sitting awhile. I think we'll launch again in March. Hopefully! 5 months and counting...

I'm already jealous, Ytmsn.
Btw, we also pour a small amount of 2 cycle oil into the fuel filter while running the anti-freeze thru the raw water pump which helps with the fogging the engine components.

My gauge is very accurate. I do a mental check every time I fill up, and usually it is pretty close to what the gauge indicates with the boat setting in a static condition. The gauge does read more fuel than is in the tank when underway. Sensor must be towed the stern of the boat.

Yes, our gauge reads slightly lower when she's angled bow down on the trailer vs in the water.

Gas gauge is dead nuts. Scary accurate. The Speedo is dead on as well until the upper 40's. Then there is a 1-2 mph discrepancy on the slow side according to gps.

In my old 200 the guage was a 1/2 tank off. It was on empty and I would add 25 gals and it was full on a 40 gal tank. That speedo was within a few mph slow. Not sure on the 222 I didn't run enough gas through it. But that speedo is way off like 4mph on the slow side.
