Engine beep and loss of acceleration
Engine beep and loss of acceleration
First off, I just purchased my new to me 2004 Cobalt 200 Bowrider (volvo penta 4.3l) with only 500 hours on it. It's in great shape and have all the maintenance records with it. We've taken it out a dozen or so times and its been great, but recently when running at about 30-35 I will get an engine beep after just a few minutes and am forced to put it in neutral for a second, then the code clears and all is well.
Oil pressure and temp gauges are reading fine, so I'm thinking this could be an exhaust sensor. Anyone else run into this?

Re: Engine beep and loss of acceleration
.
So glad you found us jn500...and sorry to hear about your beeping.
We had a similar issue on the purchase of a 2005 263 and it ended up being an issue with the water intake thru the transom on the merc outdrive. It was sucking air due to corrosion.
What is your temperature reading during the beeping?
Any pics?
And welcome aboard mate.

Time to get the engine scanned. It should have set a code

Re: Engine beep and loss of acceleration
Thanks for the warm welcome!
The temp is reading around 140 when it beeps. And no pics as the gauges are reading normal at the time of incident. Just several beeps, loss of throttle, but as soon as I put it in neutral and then back into drive, it's fine.....until I hit about 30 and it does it again.
Was it just the hose you had to replace, and did you have to remove the entire outdrive to replace it?

"I will get an engine beep . . ."
As it is on some boats, that beep could be an alarm that the outdrive fluid is low.

We removed the entire outdriive and engine. It was a worst case scenario.
But the good news for you…with your temp reading 140 that is likely not the culprit.
Like Bruce mentioned, time to get the codes read. That will pinpoint your issue.

Re: Engine beep and loss of acceleration
Welcome. My guess is riser temp sensors are tripping. When was the last time the risers and manifolds were done? Or, did you happen to watch the tachometer when you were WOT, might be over revving and shutting down. Check to make sure the prop pitch hasn't been changed. The WOT rpm should be on the engine cover. We have the Diacom software but only have the cable for Volvo 2006 and 2007 motors. If you pick up the Diacom cable for your motor feel free to bring it by the house and we can scan it.

Update: it was the riser temp sensors! Replaced both and have not had the issues since. Thanks for the help!

Re: Engine beep and loss of acceleration
Hey there! It sounds like you have a nice boat there. The engine beep issue you're experiencing could indeed be related to an exhaust sensor. Since your oil pressure and temp gauges are reading fine, it's a good indication that those areas are okay. I would recommend checking the exhaust sensor and its connections to see if there are any issues there. It's also a good idea to have a mechanic take a look to diagnose the problem accurately. Hope you get it sorted out soon! Beep-beep!
