No depth on Garmin721

Post by Bean »

How come the depth and temp don't show up on my Garmin 721? They are just blank.

Check the connection of the NMEA 2000 bus at both the transducer and the back of the Garmin.

You can go into Settings and look at the NMEA 2000 setup and see what devices are on the NMEA 2000 bus.

Depth and temp are showing up on the boat's gauges. Go into settings on the Garmin? Sorry, this is my first experience with this setup.

I just have one cable going to the Garmin. No others hanging around. On settings it says no NMEA 2000 devices. Port 2 is empty. I guess I'm out of luck. While I was under there I found a switch for accent lights I didn't know I had!

What temp are you referring to? Air? Water? Engine? In the Garmin settings there are a variety of temp functions, though I thought only one depth setting.

Air and water temp. I guess I don't have the proper cables.

For the engine data, did you install an "engine-specific gateway"? See the Garmin site.

Hey Bean
Just got a 2013 R5 8.2 merc seacore. Same gauges as yours. Did you ever find the nmea interface from the engine? I can see the square plugs on the back of the round analogue/digital gauges are obviously getting data from the engine but not sure what protocol they are running. I want to upgrade the garmin chartplotter to something a bit more recent with hd sonar. Thanks mate. R5 downunder

Assuming the Garmin is using CAN bus data from the engine, there should be a CAN to NMEA gateway somewhere...usually behind the dash.
