Bilge Pump replacement on '98 272

Post by Ryanr »

Hey Guys,

Got some great help on the last forum post (I just saw it, never got notified of comments but working on getting those things taken care of!)

My next task is to replace the bilge pump in my '98 272. The existing one works fine on the manual switch, but not auto. Since it's sitting on a buoy, I'm not really willing to have the boat be unable to expel water.

My issue arises when I get inside and get everything removed, there's a 4 pin Romex connector that ends up getting sent through the boat to who knows where, but along the wiring, there's a splice in the 3 wires from the bilge into 4 (the brown/white wire get tied to 2 wires before the Romex connector. but I can't quite understand why. From there, those 4 go into the connector, the female side routes up through the boat. I know it's wired correctly at least for manual use, but I can't reliably tell if it was wired correctly for automatic use. My understanding is that there should be a wire just directly to the battery in auto, which it may be leading to, but I don't have a good way to determine if that is in fact the case.

Anyone familiar with this wiring setup (4 wires)?

Can you post any pictures of your bilge pump and the Molex connector? It would help clarify your situation.

Here is a schematic of my 2007 240 bilge pump wiring. Maybe your installation shares some common features?

Note two interesting aspects of my bilge pump installation.
1. The bilge pump is tied to only battery #1 and that connection is done at the battery switch (not at the battery itself).
2.. The power for the automatic bilge is routed all the way from the aft battery switch forward to the helm switch and then all the back to the aft again, all the while going through at least five different Molex connectors.

While tracing down this wiring, I had found some loose connections on the back of the battery switch. I strongly recommend you check your battery switch connections.

"The existing one works fine on the manual switch, but not auto."

I'd leave it, and add a backup auto switch.
