Mooring cover, Malibu parts

Post by Anchor86 »

Hi,
I’m looking for a mooring cover for my R7. Has anyone ordered one online from Malibu Parts? I’m 4 hrs from nearest cobalt dealer.

Thank you

Any dealer that's willing to work with Commercial Sewing should be able to order you a mooring cover, as I believe they're still the OEM manufacturer for Cobalt.

Commercial Sewing is still the OEM and the covers they make are worth every penny.

Give Gordy's in WI A call. They will order and ship directly to your house.

Tell them Chadwick sent you.

That sounds about right for a current price for an R7. I believe that includes the straps and poles you install inside the boat first to make a "tent" out of the mooring cover to keep water from pooling. I have the same Commercial Sewing mooring cover system in my boat, and would replace it in a heartbeat if it was gone.

I recently reached out to Commercial Sewing to discuss the mooring cover. These are great covers. High quality. Anyhow I asked them if it was Ok to trailer with the cover on. They responded that they are designed to be trailered. Was getting a lot of mixed answers on this one via the web. Anyhow, great covers and can be towed with them on. I just towed the boat 4 hours on the highway and worked out well.

I tow my A25 from CA -> Table Rock -> CA every summer with the mooring cover on.

I'm definitely going to check these Commercial sewing/ Malibalt covers out. I tried the cheapskate route and bought a Seal Skin online. The advertising says it will fit my boat. Was very disappointed, looks like it was made to fit A boat, just not mine. Appears to be a general V bottom 22-23 foot generic boat cover, very sloppy and ill fitting, just waiting to collect water even with the poles installed. Looks like something from a J.C. Whitney catalog of the '70's. I returned it promptly. I then called Boat Covers Direct/ Carver covers and talked to a rep. They told me it was a much better fabric but still just a generic fit, not tailored to my model. No ratchet system, said I would probably not be happy. Give 'em points for honesty. I'm looking for a nice tight fitting ratchet strap cover tailored to my boat without going the local custom route.

Buy once, cry once. The OEM / Commercial Sewing cover is worth it, pricey, but worth it 100%. I was hesitant but we towed our R5 with the Cover on from Dale Hollow to Louisville and back this spring. You know that trip - both backroads and some time on Interstate 65 for us. Didn't leave a mark - the cover didnt move. It really does tow well with it on.

Call up Current Watersports or Stokley's and ask them to get a quote. Pricing varies depending on which dealer you talk to so may not be a bad idea to also call Gordy's parts dept just to keep Current honest. We ended up ordering via Gordy's and they shipped the cover directly to us in Kentucky. About 4 weeks to get it made.

Thanks for the responses. Have one on the way finally. Does water pool if the supports straps and poles are not used?

Yes, there's just too much area for cloth to sag. The poles are almost a necessity if the cover is used outdoors to prevent rain from pooling up.

On my R5 if I cinch it pretty tight, I don't get pooling but every model Cobalt is going to be different.

I finally ordered one from Malibu/ Commercial sewing. It took awhile to arrive but I got it. About 1450$ for my 220S. I only test fitted it in the storage unit but I think it is going to be a winner. It has the venturi vents on top that should suck down the cover while trailering. Another much appreciated feature is the cross strap webbing with the support poles that should do a heck of a lot better than the single pole system for pooling water. The ratchet straps are located on the side (yes!) instead of the stern where you can get to them on the dock and are also contained in a zippered compartment to keep them protected. So far impressed! :)
