Oil Leak on Newer Volvo Penta 350

Post by dennison17 »

I thought I had an oil (crankcase) leak on my 2024 Cobalt Volvo Penta 350 with only about 25 hours on it. How could that be? The boat has been in winterization mode and had not run for about five months. I check on it every few weeks to ensure all is okay. Imagine my shock one day to see about two cups of oil in the bilge! The engine has been sitting and the bilge spotless for months. Now a leak?

After inspection by my local delaership (Seattle Boat) it was determined that the leak was not from the crankcase, but rather from the power steering system. A loose clamp.

I offer my experience because I understand that this can be quite common with Volvo Penta (even newer ones) after the boat sits for a while (e.g. winterization). I DO recall having a similar issue with a power steering leak with my previous Cobalt with the Volvo Penta some years ago.
