Captains Call

Post by Ytmsn »

I have a silly question. Other than an awesome sound, does a captains call exhaust do anything for performance?

I'm trying to decide if I"m going to have one installed and whether or not it is going to be worth it. Any thoughts?

In theory there might be less backpressure on the exhaust system, resulting in more airflow through the engine and higher overall performance. In practice, most people who have actually measured notice no difference at all in top speed or acceleration.

I agree I don't think it makes much of a difference. It sounds faster :-)
You would be lucky to see 1 mph faster.
If I had my choice I would add it. Do I miss it no would I like to have it yes. Would I pay for it yes.

Agree with the the above on the speed/power. The exception would be if you tune the boat engine to know you flipped the switch and some fuel mapping changes were made to take advantage of the increased airflow. If $6k is pocket change by all mean have at it..... I would rather have a windlass anchor and a kick a** stereo than be able to flip the switch. I have had it in the past and it is fun when coming out of the hole. As soon as i got to cruise speed it was turned off every time. I decided not to option it on my A28. One of they very few options I did not include in my build. Maybe I am starting to get old ): Aslo pulling my boat today. Getting cold here and I am not happy about it.

Thanks for the replies. I figured it was just a sound thing.

Open exhaust can actually cost power by reversion. That is where exhaust flows back into the heads because the pipes are too big to establish a smooth exit flow allowing exhaust gasses to linger around the exhaust ports. Wide open, high flow volume operation will defeat reversion with wide open pipes, but low and midrange RPM power can really kill off power.
Long, smooth exhaust pipes scavenge exhaust away from the engine, therefore allowing the heads to breath normally.
CC exhaust is mostly about sound, and not about power.

I personally think the prop exhaust will make more power with the way stock engines are designed.

I added CC last year and love the way it sounds... but it really doesn't make any difference in performance. Here is a my youtube video on how it sounds with a 8.1L HO 496:

It would be a fun option for us guys, but I know my wife and kids wouldn't get it and would tell me to turn it off. So for my situation, it's out.

So if a guy WAS going to install a Captains Call, what kind should he look for? Out the back? Out the Side?

I'm asking for a friend..

Funny you ask that Ytmsn. Gerry's Marine (who services Cobalt's in Las Vegas) just completed installing the Captain's Call exhaust for our 2005 263 on Friday. Corsa made it specifically for the Cobalt models.

You can click on the link below which will take you to CORSA Performance Marine. Then just enter the year, make and model of your boat to see if CORSA has any specific applications:

I loved the Mercury Silent Choice system on our Fountain which was more of a pneumatically operated system for the butterfly valves. Not sure you can buy that anymore.

Btw, I posted this in another thread, but here is the Corsa system installed with the same engine (496 MAG HO) on a similar boat with the exact same swim platform. The platform can really make a difference in how it can sound with the echo chamber. Always an attention grabber on start - up. (Love the baby crying at the end of the video.)

Cobalt offers a system with mufflers called Captains Call Plus. I would love to hear what that sound like .

Looks like if you go out the back with a swim platform the exhaust tries to squeak out over the platform. Don't think I would like having to clean that up.

I do a lot of slow speed cruising. Probably not an issue at high speeds.

Hey Driller...I thought you were heading to bed!

Anyways, that's an interesting question. Will there be anything to clean up? I know the 2nd extended swim platform does not have an opening between layers which can be verified 60 seconds into the YouTube vid below.

Still, "squeaking" thru any opening may cause some type of build up. I'll let ya' know!

With fuel injection you don't get too much soot build up on the hull like you used to. I get next to nothing back there. Yt I would run it out the back. That way you get the 8 cyl effect. It the side you only get half. I still loved the sound out the side on Clifford but it's just not the same. I'm still I the wall about adding it. Aslan I wonder if they used most of the Cobalt prewire for the install. It's all there. Would be nice to know. Thanks.
