Why so many boats are 8'6" wide

Turns out that to tow anything wider, one needs an oversize tow permit in most states. Seems to be about $80 for a one-way permit in many states, but if you're going from Minnesota to Florida you'll need a separate permit for each state. This also explains why people around here with boats wider than 8'6" typically leave them docked all summer, and have a boatyard tow the boat out and store it over winter.

Crazy is that some states allow a lot bigger.. 10. Ft. And some ok to tow a night if bigger. ? It's different almost every state it seems.
