Battery Tenders...switch batteries off when using?

Post by thunder550 »

The local "awesome" storage place that I've been trying to get in to just had a couple spots open up, so I switched my boat over to this lot that provides electricity for tenants. I already had one Battery Tender Plus unit, went out and bought another one this afternoon so I can have each of my 2 batteries hooked to it's own tender while the boat sits.

I've always been in the habit of switching my Perko switch to "Off" when the boat is in storage. If I'm powering the batteries with a tender, should I still try to do this? Any reason why I couldn't leave the switch set to either 1 or 2 (I won't set to "All" because I don't want the possible failure of one battery to cause the other to fail) rather than turning Off, if the tender is hooked up?

Secondary question, I have both tenders sitting on top of the intake manifold on the engine. The hatch is closed and the boat is covered. I tried to do a a little bit of searching on tenders in closed quarters but didn't find much. Any reason why I can't leave the tenders to charge and maintain with everything closed up?

Like you I would stay away from both. Dont like the idea of two seperate power sources bing connect.

As far as charging with it all closed up I think it should be fine. I can not think of any concerns I would have.

I charge my batteries all the time with the boat closed up. I don't think running 2 chargers is a problem either, but I personally would turn the Perko to "off". Just In case a mouse bites a wire or whatever
