Mercruiser 6.2L Versus VP 6.2L

I spoke with my salesman. He is "supportive" of me waiting for the 6.2. They do have buildslots for later this summer (2019) which means I'll miss a good part of our (short) summer here in MI. But, I know myself. Waiting is probably better.

With that said, the deal on the 17 was pretty darn good compared to what I just priced out on the website! I'll have to consider if the 430 (vs. 380), Captain's Choice, and the tower are worth it. That's what's quickly driving up the costs.

I'll introduce myself officially in the other thread in time. But it looks like I'll be waiting a few months.

Sounds like a good plan tbully. The VP 380 horse is the sweet spot. It's ridiculous to pay $8-10k more for a software program re-map to get 430HP. (unless money is no object).

IMO, waiting is better because it removes the woulda, shoulda, coulda that you will be asking yourself for years to come..

If you are real eager to get one this season you could call around and see if someone already has one in production and you can just edit it. And if you are looking at MSRP prices you shouldn't be paying that

Thanks Tuscany. I read alot of your posts, even the ones over on hulltruth. Resale is really important to me, as I tend to replace my vehicles/toys often. So if this gets my higher resale...I'm all IN!

You know, I drive my wife nuts with this, but everything I buy, I'm looking at resale. I'm very careful with maintenance, mileage, appearance.
Tell me, when you re-sell your boat in the used marketplace...if there were 10 comparable boats for sale, one with a buttload more power and torque from a relatively new powerplant, which one stands taller?


Tower? If you like watersports, definitely get it. Nice resale item. The only complaint I've heard is that the stainless/arch that doesn't fold has a very small coverage bimini.
I must be getting old. I like the big coverage of the regular bimini. The only watersports I do is sitting on a tube in a pool.
CC? get it for Nauti, but honestly, the engine is very loud to begin with. Not the exhaust note, but the interior sound is a lot louder than what I expected.

VP carefully refers the to last generation 6.0L with the term "the engine it replaces". This way, they can directly compare the 6.2L upgrade (indirectly) without directly slamming the prior 6.0L. Something like that..
So the 6.2L 380 has 24% more acceleration and 11% more fuel economy over the (6.0L 380) engine it replaces.

Well, that's awesome. I can't wait to see what two of them will do. My sea trial boat had a pair of 350's but I went for the 380's. I wonder if the difference will be marginal or noticeable.

Subjective, of course. But my salesman was speaking specifically of your boat when he was helping me decide if I should wait (nice guy, actually, to kind of sell me away from his stock unit). He said there was a very noticeable difference out of the hole/acceleration and understood my conundrum.

The tower was a necessity for us as our kids are 14,12, and 10, and our 14 year old is just starting to wakeboard. All we do all weekend long is tube tube tube with them, so that's why we opted for the tower.

I was almost ready to delete CC when I upgraded to the VP 6.2; however, I decided to keep it on there for the same reason I added it the first time. I've always wanted it, even on boats I would see on the lake 15 years ago.

Nothing wrong with mercury's new motors. I have one in my new 220. It is fast and has lots of toque just like the VP. I ordered it this way and would do it again. Nothing wrong with VP motors either.

Merc has a great product as well loadtoad. I am a Merc fan first.
However, with Merc's current concentration on the outboard engine market, VP currently has a leg up in performance, weight, and fuel consumption with their latest products in the i/o market. Particularly with the Gen V 6.2 specs.

There is so much performance to be gained just by trimming weight.
Somewhere in YouTube land, a video exists of a direct comparison of a big block Merc 380 vs. a then new 6.0L 380.
The control boats were identical formula 25’ bowriders. The 6.0l visably sat higher out of the water in the rear.
Many scenarios were run, comparing different loads. Each time, the VP has a large performance advantage.
The 6.0 had a 320 lb weight advantage. The 6.2L has a 360 lb advantage.

Think of that.. that’s like tossing BB’s old bosses wife overboard..

Volvo had a marinized version of the VW/Audi 3.0L diesel that looked really intriguing, but retail was something around $30k.
