wench rule of thumb?
I need a new wench on my trailer. I herd a couple of different rules on how to size it.
One was 3/4 of the boat weight, or 2/3 of the weight.
anyone have any ideas
thanx

If your wench is 3/4 of your boat weight, you have big issues.
As far as winches go, I don't know the rule on sizing so I would have to Google and would probably read the same things you did. I will tell you I went with one of the ones that is enclosed and it has done a good job keeping the sun of the strap.

Re: wench rule of thumb?
I got a great 6000lbs strap for my boat and it's like 20 feet long. I wanted a shorter one because I only use 2 feet of it anyways. I had the 2500 one on and I always have the fear of it letting go and hitting me in the face. I'll pay the 2 speed winch I just put on. Loce it on the trailer i have a no idea how good it works yet.

My rule of thumb for wench is simple. I buy the largest wench that fits my trailer.

BBP I have the same two speed and it works great. If on a shallow ramp I just get bunks wet reel in normal gear and then last foot or so pull handle out to low gear and reel the rest of the way, piece o cake with the two speed Fulton F2 and I have my handle on the second hole so I could actually increase power if needed by moving to first hole. Nice winch.

Good deal. The last foot is a pain on mine.Scubadeep1 wrote: Sat May 19, 2018 8:58 pm BBP I have the same two speed and it works great. Dale and Rose, I think it’s fair to say you are not looking for a wench. I’ll even go out on a limb and say you’re not even searching for a beer wench.
Most likely a winch is probably more up your alley.

Re: wench rule of thumb?
Why does he have big issues if his wench has a capacity of 3/4 his boat weight? That is the general rule when it comes to wenches, they should be at least 3/4 your boat weight. If you have bump rails with carpet and not rollers you should go a little higher.Silverbullet555 wrote: Sat May 19, 2018 3:26 pm If your wench is 3/4 of your boat weight, you have big issues.

Oh chill out NR! He's making a funny. A strap 3/quarter of the boats weight would be a big honkin strap.

Obviously your Hooked-On-Phonics tapes have failed you again. He was asking about the size of the winch, not the strap. BBP is the one that starting talking about the strap size.Ytmsn wrote: Thu May 24, 2018 6:52 am Oh chill out NR! He's making a funny. Wow. Easy tiger. I was actually making a funny about a wench vs a winch. You could call me a grammar nazi which at least would be deserved.no_rulz25 wrote: Thu May 24, 2018 6:20 amWhy does he have big issues if his wench has a capacity of 3/4 his boat weight? A wench, which is a woman with certain tendencies.
A winch, a tool to hoist or pull something.
As for my boat, I have a Fulton F2 which I believe has a 3200 lb capacity. I have a bunk trailer and the boat weighs 5500lbs (that's a guess). According to your rule of thumb, I would be undersized. I don't think i am. I float my boat on most of the way and WINCH it up the rest of the way.
Then, I attach a chain to the bow which connects to the trailer, another bow strap that pulls the bow down connected to the trailer and two transom straps.

Re: wench rule of thumb?
The ironic thing is that I thought NR25 & YT were BOTH making funnies after my wench vs winch comment. I didn’t think either of you were serious.

Re: wench rule of thumb?
Whatever. I'm still going to get me a big wench for my bow.

Re: wench rule of thumb?
I mean he is right....average boat weight around here is 4,500lbs, thats a 3,400lb wench. Anyone w/ a wench that large needs to be getting this guy on the phone STAT.Silverbullet555 wrote: Sat May 19, 2018 3:26 pm If your wench is 3/4 of your boat weight, you have big issues.
