Ordering Trailer

Post by Protip »

I have been searching around and had no luck sourcing a trailer to fit my 220 locally. Where do you guys recommend ordering a new trailer from? Ideally I would like to get one that is custom fit to the boat. Anyone know which manufacturer built the trailers for the 220 when ordered through the dealer?

Contact Ed Champion with Big Thunder Marine at Lake of the Ozarks. He can get custom fit trailers made by Haul-Rite out of Camdenton, MO.

Ordered one through them years ago for another boat that was rather unique. I was able to take it directly to them and they matched it up perfectly.
I'd be shocked if they don't have a template for a 220 already.

What is your budget? My Boatmate custom trailer was $6k new for my 2014 220. A load rite trailer with adjustable bunks new is $3300.

I got a double axle with disc brakes on one axle from Boat Trailers Direct out of Florida. It was $3,175 delivered to TX and included LED lights with adjustable bunks. They took the deminsion of my boat and custom built it in 2014. Just throwing out another positive experience for you. 😁

I have seen Ed quoted as being the guy to go to for all things boat around LOTO. I will keep that in mind.

6k is probably a little north of what I want to spend. Partially ordering the trailer so when I sell the boat to upgrade I don't have to let the slip go with it.

Interesting with the bunks sitting vertically like that. Does that put more stress on the boat?

I wanted to, but had no luck sourcing a trailer in time.

When the bunk boards are on their end they provide more support where the wood is stronger. Also, when they are on their end they don’t warp or bend as easily. This is the same way my bunks have always been installed on all my trailers as well as cradle lifts. Not that you can’t have them another way just wanted to let you know there is no undue extra stress on the boat that I have ever experienced. I only use my trailer to haul the boat 5 miles to the shop for maintenance regularly. Otherwise she stays on the cradle lift on the Lake. I agree $6K is a little steep for a trailer unless it is galvanized and has a whole lot of beeps and whistles. But if you are boating in saltwater why spend the extra money? Hope that helps.

Exactly what Matt said. That's how you can tell him. Lol I'll be with Bald Mike Thursday through Sunday. He's from Omaha Nebraska. He's actually headed to Arkansas for a Donzi right now. He's all over. Tell him Chad sent you. I know all of the trailer manufacturers had a price increase. Also the customer service at loadmaster is really good. Your going to spend $4550-6k on a custom trailer. 3500-4500 on alum. On aluminum trailers they normally stand the bunks like that for some reason. Not sure why. Alum is normally cheaper. I had a couple pulled nice but didn't like the looks of them. There's also some cheaper manufacture by you I think. I'll look to see what I can find.

I would go cheap as possible unless you tow distance often. Especially if u r upgrading in next couple years. Boat is a ‘99 so $6k trailer should be out of the question

I go cheap on things often, ask Katie, but lesson learned last season. A trailer is not something to cheap out on regardless of how much or how little you tow. We pull the boat 10 miles round trip storage to ramp. Even with that short distance trailer issues ruined three trips to the lake last season.

I'm not saying buy the rolls royce of trailers, but I wouldn't buy the kia of trailers either. Maybe the Honda of trailers I dunno lol. You really don't appreciate the trailer until you have issues /w it, remember it is the only thing between the boat you love and the hard pavement. Sitting on the side of the road fixing a crap trailer while trying to figure out what in the hell to do with the 6000lb boat that is sitting on it isnt fun. Spend accordingly.
