New custom 1 piece cover

Post by slideruleracer »

When we bought the boat, it still had the original factory covers. But, unfortunately, they weren't long for the world.. A protected osprey nest used my boat as its dinner table at the PO's dock. The covers stunk of fish guts and osprey crap. I laundered them, pressure washed and then treated them. We got almost a full season, but the pressure washer really did it to the sunbrella fibers and even though the water would bead off due to the scotch guard treatment, it would leave these trails of blue dust that would stick to the boat.

So, last weekend we dropped it off with a local specialist and got a 1 piece cover. This will be much drier since there's no place for water to make its way around the windshield. It will also keep the gel coat between the bow and windshield nicer. Also, I had him make it longer to cover the top step/locker hatch and he added the bungee style hooks under the overhang. This will keep Rainwater from running into that locker and making it grungier than it already gets. He also cut the fabric much tighter to the bimini poles than the factory cover and kept it simpler around the cleats by cutting it tight to those as well.

I'm pleased. It was pricey - this guy isn't the guy to go to for a bargain, but he turned it around in less than a week and kept me from losing a weekend, so that's worth something. And now my boat will stay cleaner and drier.

That looks good slide but you should have had him make a full cover to protect you decks. They'll get sun bleached and nasty and wont last near as long. Can he make a separate piece to go over the decks? Or scab a piece on the back? It will be worth the added cost if he can.

Hmm, that looks like it would be really hard to put on at the mooring. Do you use it in the water or just for the trailer?

I use a snap cover for overnight. I dont have my slip yet, but when I do it'll go on when I leave for the weekend. Its pretty easy when it's on a lift. Theres a tad more to it if it's on the trailer but not too bad. I do it by myself every time.

I'm on a mooring for the foreseeable future, so something like that is probably not in my cards for now.

Yt are those trailer straps removable.. I like the fabric. It looks lightweight! I hate my full sunbrella cover as it weighs a ton.
My sharks in cover is half the weight

Matt the straps are removable. They can be used on the lift to cinch it down, but with a roof on the dock they're not necessary because there is rope in the sleeve running around below the rub rail to hold it on.

I have these custom made at Edward's Canvas in Paul's Valley OK. They're fairly light, cotton lined, waterproof and very inexpensive at 800 bucks! This one was made with bimini cutouts, and when I installed the arch they modified it for $150.

In my opinion it is hands down the best place to have a cover made, but they have to have the boat there on site.

Yes, Sunbrella. My guy said he's tried others, but they just didn't seem to last as long. But $800 is tough to beat. This one was twice that.
