I know a lot of you guys have high fidelity stereos in your home and it carrie's over to having killer systems installed in your boats.

Until recently I've never had the desire to have anything really high end to listen to, but I grew up with one of my very best friends that has always had the best of the best. Now his hobby is buying vintage stereos. He buys and rarely sells, and any ONE of his systems would be better than what a lot of folks ever have.

I always said he was batship crazy, because of the number of systems he has, and keeps buying. But to set in his listening room/den/man cave and hear what he has is truly amazing.

Here he is with a very small sample of his systems that rotate out with almost every purchase. And out in his shop there are 10 or 15 more systems setup with 30 or 40 more stacked away.

Then somehow I got infected...

So I started with an Onkyo preamp and amp and tuner. Then a little Yamaha. Then a Pioneer SX780. And now I just got a Yamaha RX-V557 Cinema Surround sound system with two B&Ws and two ADS L780s. And about to buy a super nice refurbished tube amp and a Macintosh preamp and some Altec speakers. Then I'm done. I hope.

Nice looking setup YT. I tend to bounce between expensive hobbies - Guns, Stereo Stuff, Computer stuff. I haven't gone on a home stereo spending spree for a bit - but I am due lol.

Right now for the main TV setup I have a Denon AVR-X3200W and a Pair of Boston Acoutics VR-30's that I have had forever love them

Also have a set of Paradigm Mini Monitor V5's that I use to listen to music in the office. Love the Paradim Sound and will most likely upgrade my main TV stuff /w Paradigm Floor Standing Speakers in the future. Already put in Paradigm in ceiling surrounds when when finished the basement with the expectation that everything will match at some point.

Also shopping for a new sub - running a Boston Acoustics 10in now. The Outlaw Audio Ultra-X13 is THX certified and usually goes on sale 50% off on Black Friday. I may or may not be keeping an eye on it lol. Thing is a monster: http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/ultra13.html

I got Harmon kardon running klipsch towers, mids, surrounds and 10inch sub. Been thinking about upgrading some crossovers but still sounds good to me.

Upstairs T.V. I have the Bose Cinemate system with the gemstone speakers and sub box if you want to call it that. Wife of course said no stereo in the living room. Like normal I didn't listen. This little system packs a good clean sound and punch. So it works for me. I'm getting hard of hearing so it gets turned up even louder each day. Lol

Downstairs in the basement family room. I have a 17 or so year old Yamaha amp 5.1 with Yamaha towers in front. B&W 202 I think in the rear and a Klispch center and 12 inch sub. Next to the couch. Really like the sub very smooth.
I would like to update but we don't watch the TV or movies much Downstairs anymore. I should start though.

I did home theatre installs for Best Buy back when I was in college. I’ve got a Yamaha aventage vx-867 receiver. Then I have klipsch floor speakers, center channel, and in walls for my surrounds. I currently don’t have a sub hooked up because this is just in my family room . I’ve got a whole section of the basement full of crap for when I build my media room in the basement. That will be a laser 4K projector and all in wall speakers. Then I’ve got 2 subs I will run as well.

I love Bowers & Wilkins. I pair those speakers, sub with a denon receiver. love it

I was huge into this around 20 years ago. My last completed project was building four channels of Seas Odin speakers (see https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/m ... -kit-pair/) for a home theater plus a matching center channel of my own design for a five channel home theater setup.

I also picked up the parts for a pair of LX521 speakers (see http://www.linkwitzlab.com/LX521/Description.htm) not long before our little one changed my project list around the house significantly. Some day I'll build them too, but not this year.

I used to be a huge home audio nut....now I've realized, it's futile. Things become obsolete almost as fast as phones, plus unless you have the perfect listening environment that is a dedicated acoustic room, you lose so much of what you are paying for. Here's what I have

Denon AVR 2312cl
Definitive Technology BP 8's (old, but still sound very nice)
Definitive Technology CP 2002 dual channel center speaker
Velodyne 12" powered sub in a sealed enclosure
Boston Acoustic C6A surround speakers.

As for audio source, I have a Yamaha 5 disc CD changer in the basement somewhere and a sony DVD player, but honestly, I haven't had them hooked up in years as most music is on a phone or Ipad now. The receiver has a built in parametric active EQ that really replaces an external unit. I also have an Onkyo turnable packed away safely somewhere--again, media... My last tape deck was Onkyo and it died many many moons ago---but don' t miss it.

Now, if I were to spend some cash today...hmm....well they say you should spend about 1/2 of your budget on speakers, so I'll start there...Martin Logan would be one of my top choices for home audio under $10k. Second would probably be B&W (Bowers & Wilkins). Sure you could spend 10x that much, but why. I think you might get a little better sound out of a pre-amp/power amp combo, but the new receivers are really getting to be good enough that the average person won't be able to tell the difference. From a receiver standpoint Maybe when I build the $50,000 listening room I'll splurge at little. From a "normal" consumer spend standpoint, I think Yamaha has a nice warm sound and Denon is slightly more defined and maybe a bit cleaner, but they are close. I still have a thing for McIntosh, just because I think they have a cool logo... Not a fan of Pioneer personally as I thought they sounded muddy. I think Onkyo still does some nice stuff, but I seem to remember them being bought by someone not to long ago. As for the rest, they all start to run together for me after that.

Wow, I just wrote a small essay on something I haven't thought much about in 10 years.....sometimes I scare me.

Car Stereos? yeah, I did that too. Ran a Kenwood head unit into a a 6 channel Rockford Fosgate amp @ 360w total driving Rockford Fosgate speakers all around with a Punch 250 pushing an Image Dynamics 10" sub in my last Expedition. Measured 154db on an SPL meter...100% stealth install.

My name's Sailor and I have a problem......heck, if I had invested that money back in the day, I'd probably buy an R7 cash outright.

Great thread YT! ....and yes, the audiophile bug bit me back in high school. Such a fun, albeit many times expensive, hobby (like boating).
Can't wait to see MnLakeBum's setup. Post it brutha!

The posts above are terrific. Such great equipment. Like boating, I really appreciate all brands and models. We personally enjoy anything created by Bob Carver as well as McIntosh audio. We have an 9.2.2 Dolby Atmos system.

That's really nice A7. I got a line on some Norman Lab speakers today. Hopefully will pull the trigger on them this week.
