Resetting the the computer on 2006 Cobalt 220

Post by brianrounds »

Hi all,

I have a 2006 Cobalt 220 and i'd like to know how to reset the computer to stop an annoying alarm sound. Just a FYI, the safety on/off switch I have does not push in. I've read about that and this year of boat doesn't have it.

Thanks.

Disconnecting the battery or batteries would reset the ECU...but one would think the better course of action would be to determine what is causing the alarm to sound, you know because its an alarm that is trying to tell you something is wrong.

It's at the dealer now. This is very weird to explain. I was in shallow water and may have taken something in the water intake. After starting the engine the alarm went off so I started the process of determining what this could be. The odd thing is everything measured completely fine. Engine temp was normal, oil pressure was normal. antifreeze was normal, gear oil was normal, both batteries were normal, the intake was clear. I rolled out of the bay I was moored in and it had plenty of throttle... 60mph was enough for me to prove this. The alarm eventually timed out and stopped. I drove the boat for another 30+ minutes and no problems... all gauges were totally normal. We stopped for lunch, hopped in and when I started it, the alarm began for another 5 minutes. Possibly it's another sensor - I suppose the dealer will tell me what the code was.

Yup, best bet is to have the dealer scan the ECU and get the code before you start messing with trying to re-set anything. They should be able to tell what caused the alarm to go off in the first place. Better to be safe than sorry.

Thank you very much - I'll get a picture in the Newbie section tomorrow. Great feedback here, and much appreciated.

Hey all, we the bizarre problem turned out to be an ECM issue. It took a few weeks to get a new one found for the Merc 496 that's in the boat. It was replaced and all the problems were solved. Now the boat is in the shop for the winter. Booo...
