Shifting on Volvo Penta 8.2 liter Duo Props
Hi all,
Hope everyone had a great boating season. Getting more work done on my 2005 282 as we are definitely in slow boating time here in MI! Quick background. Marina where I purchased boat replaced shift cables to both drives at time of purchase. At test drive neutral was not easily found and technician said it would get better as cables wore slightly. It really did not all season. I view this as a bit of a safety issue so want to get this operating perfectly. Anyone have this issue before or after replacing cables? Boat has 4 lever Livorsi (I believe) controls. It (the problem) is on both shifters but one is better than the other. Please advise.
Thanks!
Marcus.

Sounds to me as though they didn't adjust them correctly. I have never done this on a volvo so I can't help much. Go to youtube and search volvo penta shift cable. Should be pretty simple fix.

Thanks. I will do so. Wanted to get some background information if this was more than simple adjustment. Internet always embellishes when searching for an issue's history or pervasiveness

I’ve got the livorski controls on my 262 with the same motor. I don’t have any issues at all shifting between fwd, neutral and reverse. I think you need an adjustment for sure

Unclear if nuetral is difficult from both shifts from drive to nutral or reverse to neutral?
There is a cover on the top of the outdrive just in front of the oil dipstick. Remove the cover and you with see the shift housing.
Remove the cotter pin and gently determine neutral with the shift lever. Also determine the detent for the shifter and make the appropriate adjustments to the cable.
You can check end play movement at this time in the cable.
DO NOT force the shifting in and out of gear not running.
If this doesn’t improve, and neutral is difficult from both reverse and drive look and shifter bushings. For at least you know your centered in the detents.
And as long as you don’t have delays once you shifted to either Fwd or Rvrs you come clutch and gears should be fine.

Good info Matt and thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
Last summer at TRL I shifted to neutral while under a touch of power with livorski controls and pulled the linkage loose. It was a quick fix by the guys at The Harbor but your explanation helps in the event it ever happens again.

Re: Shifting on Volvo Penta 8.1 liter Duo Props
Great insight Matt. Thanks! Will troubleshoot it as you define. It is in both forward and reverse. Not difficult to shift but difficult to drop out of gear into neutral. Makes docking just a bit harder than it needs to be. (but at least I didn't run into three boats in Suttons Bay in high wind as guy behind me:))

Re: Shifting on Volvo Penta 8.2 liter Duo Props
Markus,
Did you ever fine tune your Livorsi shifter to make your shifting smooth?
I do not have delays w the drive engaging in Fwd or Rvrs once the gear is selected, so hoping the clutches are OK, but i tend to have a difficult time w the shifter while docking as the shifter is hard to shift into neutral sometimes. Volvo DP singe drive, w the Livorsi throttle / gear levers. I have checked my cables for backlash, and i took the cover off the back to make sure that my shifter neutral matched the drive neutral, and they do. I believe the hardest part while docking is usually going into N from Fwd.
