Stern Umbrella options for my 282?
Re: Stern Umbrella options for my 282?
Now that it locks.. let’s get crazy and add thumbscrews.. but first we need it thicker for tapping as I opted not to epoxy a thin inside nut.
. .
With the slip end glued on its Time to tap for the screws.
Using 1/4-20 and a #7 bit it was as easy as tapping plastic. Never mind but don’t run your tap all the way through like a thread chaser. You want some tension.
. .
So there we have it !! locked and installed. I have rubber o-rings at the base to absorb any movement.
Next is to throw a umbrella at it!!

I went with a rectangular 9x7 as I measured the centerline and felt with teathers and the thumbscrews it would be successful in staying.

.
Lowered it 6 inches to have it in line with the forward Bimini.

So special thanks for Lottohead for the thread.

I’m adding small teathers between the two canopies. I’m suprised how solid it fits but now that the prototype has been engineered I’m ready to convert it to chromoly . Maybe not

Thanks.. just passing the insperation onward!
Yeah buddy exactly! Just following your lead! As we’ve discovered those no breeze 100 degrees days alot , it will allow the back platform and sun pad to be a comfort zone!Ytmsn wrote: Tue Mar 19, 2019 7:37 am Good job Matt! And it looks factory.

I think you take it down underway or when backing into the garage. I’ll check the instructions

Re: Stern Umbrella options for my 282?
Hey guys! Great job Matt! I am starting to work on a 262/282 prototype this week. It's going to be aluminum as the stainless tubing in that size was off the hook expensive - I'm looking to keep the pricing in the same ballpark as the R series version. I may have some questions soon about certain details or market preferences, so I'll keep you all posted. Sorry that I didn't pickup on this thread sooner.. I've been awol on CC for a few weeks.

That really is some fine work there Matt. Congrats to all who made this device come alive. Quite honestly, it looks factory OEM....with a beautiful model to promote it on the brochure!

Re: Stern Umbrella options for my 282?
Matt - can you give me some details about the o-ring? I noticed on the ski pylon there is a black donut around the tube about 6-8" from the bottom.. is that inside of the bore or above the bore when it is deployed? How is the ski pylon prevented from rattling?
Oh - one other question.. When you insert the umbrella, does it sit on the post that goes into the stair step barrel cam? If not, how does it avoid it? If so, does it worry you that the umbrella might deform the post?
Thanks!!

Hey pal. The black or ring seems to hover at the swim platform for no reason that I can see other that a shield for water intrusion. As mine has a gap and is tight to move and sits at or above . Possibly fitted it would preload the cam lock .slideruleracer wrote: Wed Mar 20, 2019 10:22 am Matt - can you give me some details about the o-ring? The cut for the key way is “ spin the tube until drops on the cam dowel “ then a clockwise twist until it drops again. It could have a different cut for this application but using the O.E pattern was easier.
.
Option for the barrel cam not getting pounded by the umbrella would be to put a interior sub floor or weld a tube just above the key way cut out? I believe 1.5 pole clears it. But that would be a good add to insure not mushrooming the top of it.
I’m out of town now but can take a look this weekend to make sure.

1 - What is the ID of the receiver hole? It looks like your ABS version is a larger OD than the 2" factory OEM version and you still used an O-ring to help it stay in place. If I made a collar on the tube to prevent slop I'd want it to fit snug in the reciever, hence the question.
2 - How high is it from the bottom of the receiver hole to the surface of the swim platform? My 262/282 aluminum adapter tubes were going to be 18" long and I'm trying to make sure that is tall enough. It looks like your ABS version is quite a bit taller than that.
Thanks a bunch!
And yes - my plan was indeed to weld a cross bar through the tube to support the weight of the umbrella tube above the barrel cam follower. That way there is no risk of anybody bending the receiver follower if they drop a heavy umbrella down the adapter tube.

.
1st the OE Tube and the hard rubber or phenolic o ring on the tube.
Since it hovers and hard to move, my thoughts are it’s only purpose is to prevent the Tube from moving while stowed.
