Cobalt 242 or ... ?
Re: Cobalt 242 or ... ?
You will like the 242. I bought a 2010 232 last June with the 8.1 big block on a trailer, less than 200 hrs, for a hair under 50K.
Like others, go for the big block if you can swing it. It's nice to have that power in your back pocket.

Re: Cobalt 242 or ... ?
Thanks for the data point on price. I think it comes down to whether I want to spend $10-15k more for the big block...
I spoke to the seller this morning and it's a private party deal, which is nice.
Next step is to have a professional survey done on the boat... I was going to drive down there, but think I'd rather spend that time and money having a mechanic look at it.
Any recommendations in the area? Was going to call Gordys and see if they offer the service.

If you're referring to the one at Gordy's, I have a guy, long time family friend. Top notch mechanic, semi-retired from running a marina to doing service. I'm sure he'd head over and inspect the boat. PM me if you want his contact info.

Re: Cobalt 242 or ... ?
The one at Gordy's is an upgrade from mine. 8.1 Gxi instead of the Gi, Flip down swim platform step, Head (mines only storage from the other side), Trim Tabs, and it appears that the stereo has been upgraded ( at least not the MB Quart system mine came with).
It also has the bow filler cushions which come in handy.
Wonder why the engine hours aren't listed? Might be worth a call to see what the hours are before you put it on your short list. I think mine was around 200 when I purchased, but that's very low for that year model.
With those upgrades and the trailer I agree that the price is about right. I couldn't be happier with my 242 and although I spent a little more money than I budgeted, I haven't regretted it.
+We need another blue and white 242 on this group.

Like BBP says, he never heard anyone say they wished they had less engine. The power and the torque on the 8.1 is amazing. The boat never seems like it is struggling. Just give her the gas and off you go. I can pull skiers up no problem, it's not a ski boat, but it will get the job done with no complaints.Minisoda wrote: Mon Mar 25, 2019 12:42 pm Thanks for the data point on price. Test drive one with the 8.1 and then the 300. I did and made my mind up very quickly.

There ya go again with that salt water crud....Ytmsn wrote: Sun Mar 24, 2019 8:14 am Welcome from Oklahoma! Don't overlook any boat from the 2000s. Stay away from saltwater just because. The saltines on this site always get their panties in a wad when we say that, but it is what it is... If I lived on the coast and had to deal with the corrosion on a daily basis, then I'd deal with it. But I don't, so I won't.

My 232 is the same as the 242 except for no head. I have the 6.2 Merc and I have hit 51 mpg GPS clocked. I can pull anything no problem. Plenty of power. The big block would of course be better but don't ignore an otherwise great boat, the 6.2 can get up and go.

Re: Cobalt 242 or ... ?
Couple quick updates:
- looking into mechanics that could take a look at the boat on Saturday. Seller is a private party and the boat is at his lake home, so will only be available for viewing on the weekends. He also said that he's a customer of Gordys so I may want a third party unbiased mechanic. I generally trust the mechanics that work at reputable shops, but probably worth finding a third party
- he did mention that there is a bit of fiberglass damage from his lift and the estimate was a $1k to fix ... I spent $2,500 fixing almost nothing on my bass boat glass, so assuming that it's fairly minor
- great feedback on the big block... I'm sure the 320hp would do just fine, but the GMC Yukon also would have done just fine, but I REALLLLY love the 6.2L Denali. It's a sickness.

Re: Cobalt 242 or ... ?
That 2013 is beautiful, but we need the head...
That said, had a mechanic check out the 2011 242 with 8.1 in Lake Geneva this morning. Report came back very strong... boat is in near showroom condition.
It is listed at $62k and I offered $55k cash. I haven't heard back from the seller yet... Nada has the low retail at $50,485 and high at $56,955. Includes a Cobalt trailer.
Certainly don't want to low ball the seller, but seems like $55k is a reasonable offer. I also have my eye on a 2010 with the 320hp motor for $44k that I could probably get for $42k.
Any thoughts on how to approach this? I am aiming for a price that is fair and equitable to both parties.
Thanks!

Re: Cobalt 242 or ... ?
Is it a brokered boat? Makes a huge diff. I would think he has it if it's own marked up maybe 5k. So 57 58 sounds fair to me. Good luck.

Settled on 59 and got the deal done!
Taking it in for a full mechanical inspection this week, but don’t expect us to find any issues.
Can’t wait to get out this summer. First order of business is lights and stereo upgrades!
