Skeg Guard

Post by Southbound »

Brethren

I could use some sympathy as I am now a new member of the "leaving the outdrive down while exiting the ramp"!!! YES I am in IDIOT!! Of all the boats I have owned I have never done this before so I guess I was due. It was a perfect day and had no issues on the lake but I guess my brain was in the clouds when it came to pulling out. I can say, that I was distracted by the guy next to me who pulled his boat out with the motor still running. Yikes!

After pulling it out I inspected the damage which luckily the skeg is not broken or bent but has been filed down. It doesnt appear that I lost a lot of metal but it is damaged. So for those of you who "knows a friend" who has damaged their skeg what do you think about the different typed of "skeg guards" out on the market?

Good times......

Don't do it! A "skeg guard" will only make your entire skeg break off just below the gear housing next time it contacts something. Just shape the bottom of the skeg with a file, re-paint and enjoy your season.

What Smokes said. It’s less work too (don’t worry about the paint being perfect - it won’t last forever either way.)

Thanks Holy Smokes / jhnmdahl for your response. I think your point makes sense so will move forward with filing and a little paint if needed. Still doesnt help with the pain though. No doubt I wont ever forget it again!!

Darn what boat ramp was that at. I need to pack a picnic for that one. Oh. My.
Yes leave it alone. You will never notice it missing. I'm sure you left some still attached. It won't be the last time it hits something.

Big Block Power ...........it was Highport Marina on Texoma. And yes it a great place to watch the craziness. It was a zoo out there. I usually launch at a different ramp but that one doesnt have a courtesy dock to park the boat. I was solo this weekend so needed a courtesy dock to park and then run back and move the truck / trailer. Best part.... the lake level is super high so had all 4 wheels of the truck in the water to get deep enough for the boat to launch. Noted on the skeg....going to clean it up this weekend.

I was trying to find the one with the fans that have score cards. Yt ones the one.
I was posting it more of all the people watching. Not the actual boaters.

Ya, I’ve seen that one too. Never a dull moment around a boat ramp.
