New truck planning time for spring of 2020.
Ford is non negotiable, because after all, there is only Ford, and then the god awful ugly rest of them

Looking for a daily driver crew cab diesel again. I’ll be keeping my GMC for winter and plowing.
The usual decision of what looks better, short or long box.
Then there is this F-450... I’ve owned a DRW in the past, and the cost isn’t much more than a SRW F-350.

So, overkill and perceived as compensating and arrogant, or too bad azz to not buy?
Issues are 4:30 rears, stiffer rear suspension and fuel economy. The pluses are the wide track front axle which makes the truck to turn on a dime.
Honest opinions?

I have a buddy who daily drives a 450. He doesn't tow anything /w it, just decided he needed a 450. He is compensating. You at least have a big boat to pull around. The F450 may almost notice it's back there. Maybe?

The suspension between the 350 and 450 isn't that much different, think one or two extra springs in the rear pack, but they are both going to ride like crap unloaded so at that point does it really matter?

Biggest negative I can come up /w is the 450 doesn't get the nice common cab interior that the 150/250/350 does. That would make it a pass for me, but I really like the new interior and dislike the older super duty interior.

Do you really need a dually buddy?

Having owned many dual wheel 1 tons Chevrolet trucks..... I’ll agree they are without sway with heavy tag trailers and no “ weight distribution hitches “ . You don’t even worry about it! Plus they are plain sexy !!
The cons for me was when I wasn’t towing..
I needed to drop rear tires pressures to 55psi or it would change lanes when going over railroad tracks.
Parking it was awful unless I backed in so myself and others could get by the fenders next to other vehicles.
Tire edging on 10 plys happens a lot in the rear and that tire hates side wall contact event though there tough?!.
So that F series is good looking and in the series for improvement in braking they all share new technology.
Did you know we have the hardest time selling used dual wheel trucks ?? As most people looking at 3/4 tons want them as a daily driver! California as most states are trying to enforce “ dual wheel truck for toy haulers that require 3 axels.( and still people shy away?)
I worry the 450 is a little much for your enjoyment ( when not loaded) and will not be as appealing to the next owners.
Stay with a 350 . Just my thoughts.
My online CDL test isn’t going well for my summer job there so maybe this will work

Matt I am so disappointed in you. This is cobaltchat, justifying large purchases with actual logic is a dangerous path that we don't need to go down. Of course he NEEDS it, that R7 is heavy.

Matt, I can borrow a friends 310” WB” Peterbilt 389... and within an hour, I’ll have you road test ready!
Honestly, IMO, the bigger the truck, the easier they are to drive. The more wheelbase and trailer length, the more you are aware of taking a wider swing. You will be ready for mid town Manhattan within the afternoon!. Three easy steps to remember for NY driving... One hand on the wheel, the other on the air horn, and the window down for swearing at the guy you are about to run over..

Good reinforcing points Matt. No, I don’t need a DRW, and I know the thump in the rear from my last DRW. The major point you made was resale. If it’s a hard resale, then I’ll pass on it for a SRW.
That wide track front axle tho....
It sure is an awesome looking ride, and I’m a sucker for a great looking truck. My wife hated my last DRW. Not because she couldn’t handle it, but because it was a little embellishing. She is no fun...

Sorry didn't word that well. I was referring to the interior design of the truck not the option package. The 250/350 now get the same interior layout as the 2015 - Current F150.

The F450 and up still get the older SuperDuty Interior.

Jeff, all of the new Superduty trucks have the updated interior.
According to the new info, the F-350 and the F-450 DRW are the exact same truck suspension and axles now, with the 450 having bigger axle shafts and the tight turning wide track front axle. The 12-16 F-450 was a true 450 with a different rear ends, springs and sway bar thickness. Other differences are the 19.5” wheels, bigger brakes and 4:30 rears instead of 4:10 rings.
Fuel mileage is a concern with the 4:30 rears, but that may all change depending how they use and calibrate the new 10 speed. If the 450 comes with 4:10, I may still pounce.

Huh my fault, I read somewhere that F450 didn't get the new interior, sorry for the confusion.

As a second 'work/toy' truck I would love a 450, but as a daily drive, no way. I work in the city and a buddy has a quad cab long bed dually 350, and he has to park over a block away in a remote lot to fit. Plus, and it may only be an Illinois thing, but anything over 1 ton needs to go through 6 month DOT inspections and be plated as such. More money to plate, and nuisance inspections combined with the lack of convenience for daily driving made it no for me when truck shopping. My 250 does everything I need it to, comes with the same diesel, and will tow anything I will ever buy, as anything over my towing capacity will require a CDL anyway. IMO, save the money and spend it on boat upgrades.

When truck shopping few years ago, compared drw 350 with Srw 350 & decided drw was too wide for me. For what I was going to tow, the srw seemed best. And going to the grocery would be easier. But, you being a former trucker, that’s probably not an issue for you. I sure do love the super duty so good luck on your choice. And I don’t have to say, pics!

I used to daily-drive a 3/4 ton Crew Cab Duramax short-bed. No way could I get away with that in the SF Bay Area today. Way too many people, way too few parking spots, miniature parking garage ramps, etc.

Also, it rode like shit.

I still want another one, though.

Haha, I only drive full sized pick up trucks. I feel like a fish out of water driving anything else. My wife is a truck person also. Our area isn’t densely populated so vehicle size is not a concern.
For the first time though, she is thinking of downsizing from a Yukon to a mid size sportier SUV. We’ll see how that goes..

I’d like to find a 450 somewhere to drive. If it rides somewhat decent for what it is, I may not have enough sense to resist that bad azz look.
