Bad Elf device

Post by Howl Yes 242 »

Has anyone recently used this dongle with their WiFi only iPad and the Navionics app? It looks like a great option. I have an iPad 6th gen that would be a good candidate.

Not sure what an elf device is but I’m using Navionics on an iPad mini 1st gen WiFi and Sonarphone transducer for navigation. Been testing Navionics on my iPhone in airplane mode and it works great. Pairs with the sonarphone transducer it will give water temp and depth with full sonar on a split screen. All in for under $150 including all through hull fittings.

That sonar device looks pretty slick. I want a screen bigger than my phone, hence the IPad. Thanks for the info.

I do, but it's better than you playing with your Elf! 😁

So got the dongle today. Unboxed and plugged it in. Just did a short driveway test and it looks like it will work great with the iPad mini on the boat. Locked on solid GPS signal and read speed and direction properly in Navionics app while walking around the yard in circles. Will give it a proper test this weekend on the water.

That is good news, thanks.

Here's my iPad mini setup with the Bad Elf dongle. Running the Navionics Boating app. Mount is the Ram Rollr for iPad Mini, with the single suction cup mount. I have a double suction cup mount but have not had a need for it yet. With as strong as this suction cup holds I doubt I will need to use the double.

JT,
That is a great looking rig. I’m pretty sure I have plenty of side window on my 242 for the same positioning of the unit. Thanks for sharing. I appreciate the effort.

Not a problem. I love to see real examples of things so sharing when I can add value for others.

On your 242 you have plenty of room as well for a mini. I think a full size iPad is a bit much.

I just can’t find a good solution on the 232 to mount a dedicated chart plotter. I don’t have the square space on the right like on the 242s. And I think that spot is too low as well to be readily usable.

Still wish I could figure out a way to program an offset into navionics app to match the depth finder on the boat.

Curious, what’s the elf device doing for you? Doesn’t the iPad mini have GPS built in? Navionics works great on my phone in airplane mode, why wouldn’t it work on the iPad?

Unless it is a cellular enabled device, the IPad does not have GPS. The Bad Elf gives full=blown GPS capability to these devices, not just partical GPS like in a phone that relies on cell services as well.

I too think the preexisting cutout is too low. I don't want to always be looking down for directions, etc. I have no intention of linking to depth, this is strictly for direction. Which mount specifically did you get? I saw on the RAM web sight a ton of options. Thanks again...
