Trailer Brakes

Post by Mike in SC »

My recently acquired 220 sits on a Tennessee trailer with drum brakes on one axle. Function is zero.
I'd like to hear what braking arrangement you have on your rig, and how satisfied you are.
I'm planning a disc brake conversion, considering brakes on both axles.
Also curious about electric over hydraulic actuator.
Opinions?

Same set up as you. But my brakes work. It's what it is. Electric over hydraulic all 4 is the way to go. Disc.

OK. Although I'm about 3.5 miles from the ramp, there are potentially lots of starts and stops along the way. If I want to travel, brakes become crucial. So I want to get them right.
Thanks,

I agree spend the money and do EoH on all four. I will be pricing it this off season. Keep in mind not all brake controllers will support EoH so double check before you go down that road.

My buddy has them on the trailer he uses for the 190, he can stop his tow vehicle /w his trailer.

I have hydraulic surge brakes on both axles on my Boatmate trailer hauling my R5. I’m very impressed with the way it stops. It takes less pedal pressure to slow down then when I’m not pulling a trailer. Huge improvement over my old boat trailer with drums on one axle.

I had the EOH installed last year on my tandem trailer and they are definitely the way to go!! They are a bit pricey but a must have if you trailer a lot like I do.

My front axle does not have the brake mounting flanges like the rear axle. Plus the axles have about a 4" drop spindle, if that makes a difference.
So unless it's a routine thing to have that flange added, I'll probably do the rear axle with discs and a new surge actuator/coupler.

I have EOH Kodiak disc brakes on both axles. It was a $1,200 option on my trailer. Probably not a priority option for everyone, but brakes are always number 1 on my list.
Worth every cent. Stops like the truck and trailer are one piece. Totally seamless feel when applying.

I went with a Tie Down surge coupler and Kodiak dacroment brakes on the rear. Going from no braking to some braking was such a relief. The weight is still back there, just not threatening to push me through the stop sign! If my brake guy can weld backing flanges on the front axle, I will probably put another set of discs there too.

I'm late to the party here, but I'll throw in another vote for EOH. Converted mine from 2 wheels disc surge to 4 wheel disc EOH...after driving with EOH, I'll never go back to surge. Stops like crazy, and it's a good confidence booster. There's been at least one time I got cut off and had to stop fast where I think the EOH saved me, not sure I would have been able to stop in time with surge.
