Starter replacement

Hello all,

I believe I'm in need of replacing the starter on my 97 232. Anyone on here replaced theirs? If so, was it very difficult? Also, is it located below the alternator? Thanks!

Welcome. I can't imagine a starter on the frt of the engine under the alternator. Maybe I would have a marina change it for you. What ever you do only get a marine grade starter.

Unfortunately you are going to have to be a contortionist. Unless you have some small children whom are skilled mechanics I would agree with BB to take her to a service shop.
They have small people with small hands.

I appreciate the input fellas. I spent the last hour or so and found the starter. Cmattj you are correct about needing to be a contortionist. In order to do it I'd need to pull the power trim pump and a couple other lines. I don't have the time with coaching football or desire to do it. I'm gonna pay to have it done. Cmattj your engine is the exact same as mine. How many hours on yours? Any issues?

I wanted to see if you originally posted a engine pic so I did some “ big brother watching you” stuff.
That’s your engine pic so it would guide you. And I’m agreeing with you as it’s best to take it where people do this all day long.

Matj - you need to confirm the starter is bad and its not something else like the fuse on the starter (you can test for certain problems). Also make sure you get a estimate from a marine mechanic. The removal and reinstall cost may force you to do it yourself if it is the starter and you don't have to be a contortionist but you do have to take your time and bag and label everything. You may also want to consider doing other maintenance on that side of the engine once you or the mechanic gains access to the starter, for example like replacing plugs, sending switches,etc. Good Luck.
