Timeline for warranty work

Post by TTU »

In October I contacted the boat dealer that I bought my boat from to have it winterized and have warranty work done. It was a pretty extensive list that needed to be preformed and all were there when I purchased the boat. Sense it was new, I bout it sight unseen.

The repairs needed were:
Two gel coat cracks on the cleats.
Scratch in the powder coat for the tower.
Moisture in the back deck.
Dash had something sharp put on it that cut it up.
Dent in the dash plastic where someone had hit it.
Tear in the pocket on the back side of the drivers seat.
A few snaps that wouldn't snap down.

I called in November and was told there was a pretty long line and they had not had time to look at it yet. Oh well I thought, no big deal and that's understandable. Towards the end of December I contacted the shop manager again to be told that he had forgot about my boat, but he would start on it the second week in January and should have it back to me shortly. When that time came around I contacted him to see how the repairs were coming along. I was told that they still had not looked at it, and it was all on him for dropping the ball. He then promised me that he would sell me some tower speakers at cost and install them for free, so I thought that was fair seeing I was not using it yet. This is when I started calling weekly.

A week ago they finally started on the repairs. He also sent me a quote for the speakers charging me full retail!!!! At this point I am just far beyond pissed. Has anyone else had problems with warranty work from their dealer? Or am I not being patient enough? Also I am very meticulous with my boat and this whole winter it has been sitting outside instead of inside my covered storage.

No you are not out of line at all. For the amount of work you have this should have been resolved months ago. I had an issue with the head unit in my R7 and it was replaced within a week.

Thank you for not blaming Cobalt. If you blamed Malibu that would be ok. It's prob the fault anyways. 😂

But really I would make a call to the GM or Owner of the dealership. That service manager is not doing his Business any good. They need to know what's going on. The real prob here is most of this stuff prob happened at the dealership and not the factory so Cobalt prob isn't going to be paying for most of this. So he prob just didn't want it to go to his policy account. But anyways you need to give him a time line or tell him you might just let the world know how good he's doing. That wakes everyone up. But before you do anything let the people in charge of the dealership one and let them fix it and up date you on progress by next Friday.

I had a similar issue with my dealer. Contacted on the phone and followed up with an email in Aug about several issues, (top seam separated, rust issues on the swim platform hardware, ski pylon issue and discoloring on the rub rail). None of these kept me from enjoying the rest of the summer and fall boating and we both agreed I'd bring it to them in Nov. Dropped it off Nov 4th. Called a few days later and was told Cobalt was reviewing the discoloring issue and they'ed call me back. No calls. Called a few more times in Nov.... "Waiting on Cobalt." Called week of Thanksgiving and was told they were backed up winterizing and they would get to it the following week. Called back early Dec and the Service MGR was at a training and no one could give an update other than the boat was there and no work had been done. Called several more times in Dec and "Waiting on Cobalt". Called first week of Jan and was told they finally pulled it in the shop and had a few of the issues fixed but "Waiting on Cobalt" for the rub rail fix. Called the following week and was told they had still not got a response on the rub rail but everything else was fixed. Called week of Jan 20 and was told they were replacing the rub rail, it was in and they had it half done.... BUT they pulled all their tech's out of the dealership to get ready for the Boat Show!!! Finally picked it up Jan 31st and got it to storage.

No one apologized or offered any discounts. Only once did the dealer call me with an update... After I complained..

Great folks and great experience during the purchase.... Just no sense of urgency after the purchase on warranty issues....

Yes you hear this about some boat and motor cycle Deakerships. I just don't get it. They think the work will never stop coming in so they don't worry about it. They need some good car dealership managers. 🤔😉

Sad as the recreational market doesn’t worry. But as BB said it’s starts from the top.
The owners need to set a measurement for reviews and management needs a business model that is inclusive on all employees.
The second biggest investment people make besides their homes.. is their car.

A measurable industry that even has B.A.R agency to keep them in check on working ethics.
Your 3rd biggest is obviously our entertainment ( Boats, RVs, motorcycle etc). And no one cares.

200k Cobalt... Means nothing to some dealers as they sit partially covered for months usually, and the staff leaves the cover poles out.
Or you notice the new practice of drain plugs removed while rotting to promote the lack of care as our prize possession sit waiting.
You know ...Incase it rains or snows.

Automotive management as a lot of us are in, jump daily to wow the consumer for these reasons.
So until the Entertainment/ Toy / Hobby industry has a measurement I worry this has become an accepted practice.

Now there are still great Marine dealers out there who get it... Its up to us to find them.

So I took your advice and contacted the GM directly today. He was very apologetic. About 2 hours later I received a email with an update on the progress of the boat and a corrected quote for the stereo system. Thank you for the advice. Only being 28, I haven't ran into many of these instances and can sometime be too forgiving.

That's awesome. Glad we could help. Don't blame it on your age. I see more younger adults blow up instead of just pushing it off. I will help someone all day long that comes to me calm cool and collected . If you come at me with guns a blasting forget it your going no where.

I worked as a salesman for four years out of college and I 100% agree with that statement. I try to always be understanding and treat people like I want to be treated. With that being said, sometimes I don't draw the line soon enough.

True but look where you are now. You own a Cobalt at 28.
Congrats!
