What do these wires go to?

Post by BMuu35 »

Hello,

New 2000 Cobalt 206 owner here.

Currently I’m in the process of upgrading the factory stereo and cleaning up wiring.

I have these 10 gauge wires that lead to behind the glove box and go along the port side. The red goes somewhere behind the built in cooler and the black wire goes to the grounding block behind the motor.

What are these for? I hooked a volt meter up to them and couldn’t get any voltage from them after trying all the switches. Image[/img][/img]

They weren’t plugged into anything and I’m thinking of removing them or using them for something else.

Normally they are labeled. Looks like someone Already updated your stereo. Those are prob more power and grd wires for a amp. They go to your perko switch or area. There are prob circuit breakers back there too it could go to by that area. Sometimes they leave them disconnected but run them to that area.

Welcome and please go to the new Member section and introduce yourself and post pictures of your new to you boat.

Thank you for your response. I did pull off the perko switch to see if the wire was connected to the switch itself and it wasn’t.

I should have investigated farther but I didn’t so it could be behind the carpet in that area.

I have been taking pictures of the progress and am planning to introduce myself with photos of the finished project when I’m done.

I’m wondering if I can pull that red wire out of there without damaging anything. I’m not sure it’s actually hooked to anything.

After seeing harness assembly’s put together at Cobalt, I’m positive since it’s marine grade It was was for options not taken. ( Captains call, water system, electric grill? ) strike that one.

The fact you can’t get them to power would require you to check your output side on your auxiliary switches.
So are off to the new members section yet?
We want to see the whole package.

I can only suggest but believe it is Colbalt accessories power cable wire (harness). The original owner of your boat could of ordered a fancy radio or GPS or tower speakers, more interior lights, or...whatever the accessories package was in 2000. The boat only gets one wiring harness. My boat had plenty behind the glove box up under the gunwale. ( tie it up out of the way)

UPDATE: I needed some 10 gauge marine wire for how I wanted to setup my stereo so I traced these back to under the carpet below the Perko switch.

They weren't connected on either end so I was able to remove them and utilize them in other areas.

The new stereo setup is awesome!! I am running the positive switched wires that are meant for the docking lights (I don't have docking lights) directly to the head unit. This allows me to switch the key on and off with no interruption in music. I also utilized the wiper switch to turn on and off the speaker LED lights.

More to come as the project comes along.
