Sea pump

1990 202 Cobalt Condurre
Volvo AQ271 Engine

So I'm changing the sea water pump on the above engine. This is my first Cobalt (first boat actually) and I had a question on the pump housing. According to the schematic, the rubber pump fits on a spline in the housing (pump). Pretty simple. The problem is that the pump housing has quite a bit of play in it were you can wiggle it back and forth, hoses and all. I'm guessing it shouldn't do this since it's held onto the pulley by 3 allen head bolts. Is this supposed to move a little? Seems there's a bad bearing or something somewhere?

Hey Scotty.
I’m assuming that it moves up and down? As you can see it has a housing off the pully ( 3 Allen bolts)
The bearing that supports that shaft is behind the four screws that you removed for the impeller.
Possibly needs to be replaced ?
No worries just pull it off and take it to a local machine shop to have one pressed in.

Thanks for your reply. I hadn't taken the main housing apart from the pump housing yet but I figured that the bearing was starting to go. Now that I have the whole thing off the pulley, I can see that the pump itself will have a little play back and forth (rotation) which is held in check by a stay bracket underneath. It certainly shouldn't move up and down or in and out though. Looks like a rebuild in my future.

Get your engine serial number ( Volvo is persnickety about application) and get a kit.
