Shifting very stiff after long run

Post by CD262 »

Hey all, have a VP DuoProp, 2011 262. 175 hrs to date.

First VP after last two boats had Merc B3s. As a general rule, since buying this boat January of 2019, I have felt like this VP has been much stiffer shifting into fwd/reverse/neutral.

Noticed this year that the shifting seems to be really stiff after long runs in the boat, after about 20-30 min or so. Once I come down off of plane, its pretty tough to get it into neutral or into reverse. Once I "finesse" it out of gear and cycle back and forth, all seems to be okay and operates normally. While skiing/tubing/normal heading around on the lake, things seem BAU. No issues with throttling down, just getting out of gear.

Also, when getting into it the first time on the weekend after the week has passed, no real stiffness or issues to report. Just after long runs.

Anyone else seen or had anything similar?

Hey CD .
What’s your hours and outdrive service history?
Volvo does use a unique oil proprietary to there outdrive.
Warm fluid creating cone clutch sticking could be a possibility. As well a low fluid condition creating this.
If your not experienced in checking the dipstick and replacing the oring have a Volvo shop service it with a pressure check.
If over 350 hrs it may be come clutch time.

Sounds to me like it needs new shift cables.

Thanks. 175 hours. Just had the outdrive pulled, inspected and serviced over the winter. I'll need to check levels when I get back to it, but just curious if anyone else had had a similar problem. Seems odd that it is only after a lengthy run and not consistent. Would think that if it is due to it getting "stiff" from not being shifted, I would see it upon initial start up after sitting all week, but its not there.

That was my initial thought as well, but again just seeing if anyone else has run into something similar.
