R5 with 8.2l Merc

Post by ocurtis »

Curious if anyone on here has the R5 with the 8.2, specifically the 430 hp option. Just curious on performance!

Boy not sure if I've seen one. Maybe 1. Most got the 6.2 380 or 430. Let's wait and find out. I think a dealership here in Wisconsin might have one in Sister Bay WI.

I have the 8.2 rated at 380 HP, but I would love to know how the 430 performs. My 2014 with tower will hit about 52 with 2 people and full tank of gas. Maybe, we will see one at the regatta and we can have a nice little drag race to see how much better it performs.

I also have the 8.2, 380 HP on our R5 love the power all the way through the throttle. We have the tower and I pushed it last weekend for a brief couple of seconds we were at 55. Are old boat was a 226 with 350 mag and the torque is so much more noticeable in the Big Block. Big Plus when you turn the key at the dock everyone just drops their Jaws when that Merc lights off.

I think you (and motex) mean 6.2 380 horse.

Merc (and/or VP) never made an 8.2 (502 cubic inch) Fuel injected 380 horse marine application.

That is incorrect sir. When GM discontinued the 496 motor Mercury instead of going to the gen 4 and 5 GM marine motors they went their own way and started building their own 502. And offer it in either 380hp or 430hp as the HO. You can still order them today in any R series cobalt.

Wow. I stand corrected. I never knew there was a "detuned" 8.2L offered. ...always thought when they came out with the MPI 415 hp 502 "MAG" cubic inch in the 90's they kept the horsepower in the 400's and above for future 502 iterations....especially when Merc started producing these massive big blocks again under the 8.2L moniker. I'm showing my age.

What else is different with the engine internals between the 8.2L 380hp and the 430HP?

...and thank you for the update! 8-)

Got some good response! I am planning an R5 or 242 wss in my future, and the 8.2 Merc is a must. I am hoping to find one that is 4-5 years old with a tower.
Any feedback on the Volvo 380 option Inc comparison to the Merc? My main concern is service centers

About 85% of the r series Cobalt’s have the volvo motors. They are the new series gm motors so service is not hard to find.

I have the 6.2 vp 380 in my R7 and love it. I came from a big block and the new small blocks have every bit the power the old big blocks had.

and of those 85%, 90% are the 300hp, 15% are the 350, and 380 are impossible to find!

I would consider an R7 too. I really need to narrow down at some point haha! If I could spend $150k and order my perfect boat this would be a lot easier!
