Our first boat had the venerable 4.3LX GM vortec six cylinder. Great little engine at 190HP in a small boat such as yours. It worked for us at the time. It taught us power management, docking, and plane technique all in a package that was easy to manage. Then we grew to love the V8's and of course more HP and had a foundation from which to build.

Sounds like this six cylinder will work well for ya' W3....especially not having had larger. It will do fine for a 20 footer. When you start longing for more then it's time to upgrade. Now get out there and git her'. 8-)

.
We all started out with the 4 cyl 130 or the 4.3 v6. We loved those boats and yes moved up. Granted they cost less then 10k back then.
I'll move you up to my bb for the 200s price though. So no need to mess around anymore.
What do you mean no need to mess around anymore?
.
He’s saying he wants to get you into a big block V8 now (or even a small block V8) skipping the four or even the six cylinder models and going straight to the high horsepower. .

Kinda like a dog dare....then skipping the double dog dare and going straight to the triple dog dare.

I had a '15 200s with the VP 270 (5L) engine. It did have the duo prop lower. It had a great hole shot and mid range acceleration was very good. Top line speed with 4 or 5 adults, half a tank and the bimini up was 45. It was a slow climb from there and I always ran out of lake. My engine had a lot of hours though (> 1000). I would guess you would end up 8 or 9 MPH below your AR195 but the ride will be so much better. Three years ago I looked at a used '15 200 with a couple hundred hours. It had the v6 240 hp volvo duo prop. This was pre-closed cooling. If I recall the best price given to me was $40K with trailer. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Went and looked at it last night. It is pretty much brand new inside and out. 12.9 hours, so just broke in. Gorgeous boat. It has the duo prop on it. Not really sure what all the benefits of that are, but people seem to prefer the duo to the single from what I have read. I think it will do just fine for what my needs are. She came down to $42k and will allow me to write the sale price on the title so I can save on taxes. At the very least, if I don't like it, I can use it this year and sell it as a 3 year old boat with very low hours and 2 years of warrant left next spring. Used boats sell pretty good here in Michigan and I bet I could at the very least break even on it. I honestly think I could re-list it after buying it right now and get $47k. There are no decent used boats for sale in Michigan right now. A lot of boat enthusiasts might be turned off by the engine, but this boat probably meets the needs of 75% of boat buyers.

Sounds like a great boat for ya' W3. DuoProp outdrives have great hole shot benefits for getting the boat up on plane. Change the impeller, filter, and fluids if it was not done this year. Be sure to give us a Captain's report too...and post a pic (of the boat not the title price   )

How often do you have to change the impeller on these? What is the average cost?

Unless you know when it was changed last, I would change it now. The impeller is a rubber piece that spins at high speed to suck water up through the outdrive, around the engine to cool various places including fuel and oil, and back out of the boat. If those rubber pieces get brittle, worn from abrasive sand or rocks, or lose their shape then bad things can happen...like overheating and/or rubber pieces clogging the internals.

Normally cheap insurance to pay roughly $15-$30 for an impeller and an hours worth of labor at $65 to $90 an hour depending on the marine tech. Work it into the deal and be done with it.

Here is a review of your boat, but equipped with a 225 HP V8. I think the VP V6/200 DP in your boat will perform similarly but with a quicker time to plane, better fuel economy and quieter operation.

Anyone know how tall the vertical swimdeck wall on the stern is (to the left or right of the tow hook)? Is there enough depth behind that wall to mount a pair of speakers back there? Just wondering if I can get a 7.7" or 8.8" speaker in there.

I think you will find the Volvo 200 V6 to be fine. The gen 5 Volvo V6 has a lot of mid range power and should get a 200S around pretty well. With all the tech (variable valve timing, direct injection, etc.) in the gen 5 Volvo I don't think you can really compare it to an old carbed 4.3 LX Merc.

Having previously owned a AR 195 Yamaha, I can tell you the difference will be night and day in terms of comfortable (and quiet) cruising. The power that little supercharged engine in the Yamaha puts out is great, but the jet is quite a bit less efficient than a stern drive (and can't be trimmed) so you won't really give up too much top end (maybe 4 mph). Plus you won't burn through 91 octane at an alarming rate.....
