"I know there are several people on this forum who are concerned with the top end speed of our boats (and I'll get flamed for repeating this), but I don't think the R series target audience is the performance top speed market. there are plenty of boats for that already on the market place. My R3 with a 350 goes just shy of 54 mph which I consider very quick for a boat of its size and weight. We typically cruise at 25 - 30 mph and I doubt we'd cruising faster if the boat went 60 mph instead of 54 mph.

The question I have is whether I can option an R6 with a 380 and get the same 54 mph the R5 gets with that engine or I have to go up to a 430? In the end, I think one has to drive the boat to see what the whole package offers. There are many details that make a successful boat and one of them (bow area space) was pointed out in apostle's above, an issue that hadn't occurred to me. So, I'm a bit negative on that change, but who knows, the additional usable space in the cockpit might more than make up for it."

So I don't know how I missed this because it's so directed at me 😂😂
I loce it!
So traveler I hope you don't have and bad luck this weekend. Just saying. We know people that have talked bad about Bob and their boat sunk the next weekend 😂

So Bob I love how your first boat the 240 was the bomb and now the 350 is the bomb and you think you will be happy with a 380😂😂 no way Bob you need the 430 to get to 50. You won't be happy without it. Lol
I remember the stories of you docking the first time. Man those were great memories and now look where we are. Specking out a r6 with a 430 and then next year the r8. I loce the 2footies!!

I've been flamed. Has anyone got the prop chart for the R5 stern drive? I was pretty sure it said 54 mph with the 380, but I could be wrong. Anyway, to each his own. My friend has a 22' regal that he says will go 60 mph on the river. But he says that my Cobalt will beat him in light chop where his boat loses speed as it is being bounced around. I seriously don't understand what the rush is anyway. When I get to the lake for the weekend, I try to slow down and relax, not find little old ladies to race. :)

Bob where have you been. We've been saying loce for years. A7 said loce instead of love once and it stuck. 👍
Sorry no 280/240 for me ever.

I waited a few days before posting because you have seniority but finally I couldn’t just leave that big fat softball hanging over the plate any longer.

Bob Rae I had a 2013 Regal 2300 that did 58 on the speedo and only 51.5 on my iPhone gps app so your friend is probably mislead. If I never downloaded that speed app I may have never traded in that Regal. My 430hp R5 does 56-59 on the gps with the lid folded with variation depending on chop, temperature, barometric pressure, wind speed, uphill or downhill, mood of engine, etc. The prop chart says 54 for 380 and 56 for 430. Interestingly the difference on the surf model is 4 or 5 mph between 380 and 430 (I think 49 and 54mph). all these stats come to only one conclusion. You need the 480hp Ilmor engine in your R6.

Illmor is doing some cool things 👍
It will be interesting if that's what Bu brings to the plate in the r8!!

Not sure how I missed that post. Not many posts do I miss. But hey feel free to take the lead anytime. 🤣🤣

I’m not a top end guy. But even though we don’t cruise at top speed, I won’t own a boat that doesn’t fly. There are those times where time is of the essence..like when you are about to get dumped on and lightning hits...or when someone on board needs to drop a 3..
An R7 with a single is pushing the limit IMO.

The A29 wouldn’t make the short list, and now the R6 carrying so much more weight.. it’s not sounding good for the R8..
We’re now getting into SeaRay territory where big/heavy boats are underpowered.

I am not a top speed guy either. But to me a higher top speed means a higher cruising speed. I boat a big lake and like to cruise in the 35mph range and I do not want to be working the heck out of the motor to achieve that speed. My R7 with the VP 380 is turning about 4300rpms(as you know redline 6200rpms) to achieve this speed. I am going to guess without some gearing or prop changing the R8 with an extra 1100lbs will be at 4800 to 5k to achieve the same speed. Which is a deal breaker to me. Guess I need to keep saving for twins

I know there are several people on this forum who are concerned with the top end speed of our boats (and I'll get flamed for repeating this), but I don't think the R series target audience is the performance top speed market. there are plenty of boats for that already on the market place. My R3 with a 350 goes just shy of 54 mph which I consider very quick for a boat of its size and weight. We typically cruise at 25 - 30 mph and I doubt we'd cruising faster if the boat went 60 mph instead of 54 mph.
I can’t believe no one has flamed you yet for your heretical position on top speed. The R5 surf with 380hp goes 49mph. This new one with the extra 1000lbs should be even slower. Even the non surf may be in the 50mph or less range. You might say top end doesn’t matter but when you come out of the channel into Lake Winnipegosis in your shinny new R6 with the fancy giant dual iPads thinking you’re looking good and some little old lady in a Searay starts passing you, you’ll have $180,000 worth of post purchase regret.

Ok I am kidding.... but only partially.
Prop charts aren't out for this boat yet. Someone has posted that the R5 does 54 mph with a VP 380. My information is the R6 will achieve 50 - 51mpg with the same engine. So a bit slower than the current R5, but anyone who was unhappy with 54 mph and wanted 60 mph would be buying both boats with a 430, except the R6 will go 58 mph instead of 60 mph with that engine (if my information is right). So, there you have it, the R6 must have a faster hull to be able to come within a couple of mph of the R5 with an additional 1,000 lbs.

I agree that if one likes to cruise at 35 - 40 mph a top end of 60 mph means less work for the engine. I guess I'm the odd one as I don't boat that way. Most of my boating is done within few miles of my marina. I can appreciate that some people travel by boat to their cottage or visit friend sown the lake regularly, in which case a quicker cruising speed is desirable.

I'll be test driving the R6 in September.

well after 11 pages of what if's I texted my dealer to see if prop charts have been released yet. And I got the answer of "we know about as much about the R6 right now as what is on the website". So looks like until we get some captains on here that get some seat time behind one. We are all just speculating.

I agree I cruise 35 or 40 ask the time. We can boat on a large lake or a ok sized one. Both ok to be cruising at those speeds. My rpms are 3500 or 3800 maybe. So I'm good with that. At 60 I'm at 5200.
I think every boat should be able to reach 60. I guess I'm as odd as you Bobrae 👍😂😂

Sad but true a 22 ft boat with 430hp should teach mid 60s or more in just saying. The sad thing is Cobalt has never been a speed demon and we all know that and except that. Even me.

My information is reliable. An R6 is expected to go 50 - 51 mph with a 380 but the prop charts aren't ready yet.

380..430...splitting hairs.
Seriously doubt that 2-5 MPH is worth fussing about.
There is no performance upgrade that we would have to have...
The boat is what it is with either, and that’s a single engine Cobalt, and Cobalt doesn’t seem too concerned about fattening up the boats.

Performance differences? It’s about one vs. two.

BB, keep your eyes open for an FH7 prop deal. I’d like to try that set up.

I miss the old Cobalt where you could get a 22’ boat with a 502 big block and captains call...premium brands should have more power than you need, it’s just part of being the best.
