Fishfinder/GPS install

Post by Jklucka »

I have a 2003 240 Cobalt and I'm looking to add a GPS/Fishfinder unit. Has anyone installed their own? If so, where did you mount the transducer? The place I plan to mount it is currently occupied by the factory water temperature sensor. If you could provide pics that would be most helpful.

Did you ever have any luck with answers to your question? What kind of unit/ transducer are you going with? I recently purchased an '01 226 and am thinking about installing one but am new to this and have been trying to research. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Are you asking about transducer location or where to mount the unit at the helm?

The transducer. I am also looking at the option of the Vexilar SP200 SonarPhone to connect to a tablet. That is a transom mount transducer but I have also been thinking about in hull transducers. Decisions, decisions

Yeah, I’m going with the Sonarphone paired to Navionics on an iPad since there wasn’t any room at the helm to mount my Lowrance HDS 5.

Use a stern saver glued on with some 3M 5200 so you don’t need to drill more holes in the transom. You’ll need to open the hole the factory temp sensor goes through up to accept 2 cables. I bought a nice through hull fitting to make it look nice.

That's a great idea. I'm loving the ideas I am getting on this site! Can you post a picture of your install when you get a chance? Thanks!

Yep, when I get all the stuff and do the install I’ll post pics. Still waiting on the Bad Elf gps for iPad.

Thank you! Do you need the bad elf if you are using Navionics? Won't the Navionics track your location on the chart? I'm still researching all this stuff but I was thinking that the Novionics chart would show where you are and your path of travel even if you are working off the downloaded chart. Thanks again for your information, it is really helpful!

The Bad Elf is a gps unit, it’s what gives the iPad gps connectivity. Navionics displays charts and is compatible with Sonarphone to display depth and temp on the same screen.

I went with a humminbird Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2. Very pleased with the purchase. The install took longer than expected but it was a great learning experience. I selected this model because it had preloaded maps of all the lakes I frequent. The Garmin for the same price did not have the maps loaded.

The hardest part was deciding where to mount the unit. Cobalt doesn't give us much dash space to play with. Unit works great even when we're flying across the lake.
