Cobalt blood change
.
I'm curious how many folks here change their own oil and what you use?
We run synthetic oil in everything we own.
Just ordered a couple of OEM Merc filters as well as you can see from the pic below.
Since this is the first boat we have owned with this type of oil filter configuration (vs right side up), do you guys & gals have any tricks of the trade from keeping the oil from getting messy. I was planning on using a plastic bag wrapped around the filter and housing while unscrewing. Other thoughts?

Re: Cobalt blood change
Aslan punch a screw driver through the top of it. Then the oil in it will drain back into the engine. I use only manufacture oils in my toys. I'm goofy that way. So I run Volvo any oil and filters and drive lube. Use a oil 12 pump that worked great last time. Oil has to be warm though. About 2 mins and it was empty.
I also us BG Moa product in all of my 4 stroke engines. Great stuff for dry engine starts after sitting and just extra insurance.the stuff works.

Re: Cobalt blood change
As BB Stated.. With my 496 Ho I would do the filter last.. (stupid upside down design)
Punch a hole. Pull my drain plug and pull the chain to expose the drain tube (you may have the dipstick only set up but check because then you can just let it drain over night.. )
Either way once you get to the filter barley loosen and wait a minute.
I also as BB said only Used Merc Oil and filters
Volvo has it right as you can fill the filter partially and limited mess. Now I will only use Volvo Specific Items

Thanks Matt. I don't think I have this like you said. Would you be able to elaborate on this chain contraption?

Re: Cobalt blood change
Aslan you probably have the way drain plug. Pull your bilge plug and see if it has like a fishing leader on it. The drain hose is attached to it. Take the plug out and let it drain. I only had one boat with that and the oil want hot and it took over night to drain. I would just suck it out the tube.

I've been using Mobil 1 after hitting the first 50 hours on the new engine. My oil change was posted at:

Re: Cobalt blood change
Lots of good advice here. I find oil changes easy on my 350 MAG MPI. I use a Merc oil filter, either Mobil 1 or Amsoil 10w40. Punching the top of the oil filter help drain some of the oil out, but a plastic bag and lots of towels will help keep your bilge spotless. I use a suction pump to get the oil out, and it works well. I did have to buy it as it screws on to the dip stick opening (threaded).
I like to change out the oil and drive lube at the end of the season and take one more trip out on the lake to assure levels are spot on and everything is happy. I am at 260 hours in a clean fresh water lake, so I hope my engine will last for many more years.

Re: Cobalt blood change
Great advice Chris.
I received both the Merc oil and fuel filters today. I order two at a time.

I used them on my merc stuff..
Does Volvo offer a low micron high performance filter?
Wonder if the bypass is different being upside down on merc vs volvo..

That was it Intent when they made that filter in production.
But it was designed for Higher efficiency is why Merc designated them for the race motors.
Most GM filters interchange all the way to the 5.0 in the V8. Its the same just internally more efficient and case thickness is sturdy.
The 496mag and HO takes the same.. You get at Taller filter that is Thick and wont crush when trying to remove it and Drain back with that silly upside down is taken care off.
I have also used K&N hp3002 as it has a 1 inch Nut molded to the top for ease or removal..The short HE filter is part 35-858004K
You cant go wrong with OEM so no worries as they will all do the job fine and drain back is avoided.
Now to Have BB find my Volvo Racing Filter but im fine with OEM too.
