US boat sales strong

Post by AsLan7 »

.
Many of us here are a part of the trend....

.
National Marine Manufacturers Association announced this week that unit sales of new powerboats are expected to be up 6 percent in 2017, marking an estimated 260,000 new powerboats sold last year.

.
It’s not just new boats Americans are buying; there were an estimated 981,600 pre-owned boats (powerboats, personal watercraft, and sailboats) sold in 2016, totaling $9.2 billion in sales, NMMA reported.

.

Now time to check the personal helicopter sales...

Guilty here! And I will agree with those numbers. It wasn't just holiday weekends that we noticed a busy lake...seemed like last year the parking lot was full every weekend last summer. I guess that's not changing this summer! Early bird gets the good parking spot at the marina.

Guilty!🚤
But sales are trends tied to economic news.

Devils advocate for conversation..
With the stock market soaring, and lots of perceived “wealth” driving sales, everyone joins the party. But, how long will it last with the inevitable “correction” looming?
2004 comes to mind.

RV/boat sales are always connected to consumer confidence. People love to spend money they don’t have when Wall St. news allows phantom security. When stocks do slide back to reality, and everyone starts panicking like the world is ending, sales will slide with it.

2001, I stand corrected.
I know I should be selling the few index stocks I have right now. Not much any of us can do about the pending bloodshed coming to our 401k. On a positive note, I think we will see more of a 2001 type correction.
But until then, I'm sure the orders are super strong for 2018.

Sure glad we bought last year, would have hated for it to be an odd number like 981,599.

Oh wait, that's 2016 data. Nevermind.

Haha, sounds like my wife. Always buying groceries in even numbers.

Bringing this thread back to life.
Summer of 2020. Due to people not cruising or flying somewhere on vacation, there are a lot more people around here buying boats.
At Greers Ferry Lake this summer, most dealers have sold most of there inventory. Dealer closest to us has been without new boats for weeks, and finally got 2 in last week. Even the used boats are selling like hot cakes.
We were told that we could probabaly sell out 2019 R3 for what we paid for it, even thought it has over 100 hours already. Not sure if thats true, but we love our boat (obviously with 100 hours already).

Most of the boat stores near us are all out of inventory. The jet boat store only has a couple of Center Console style in the lot (we don't understand those type boats around here) Pontoons are all gone at a couple local places including the Bass Pro shop near ShopryLand.

We sold a jet boat way too quickly (should have priced it higher) .

Boat sales are crazy. I drove by our servicing dealer a couple of weeks ago and I thought for a second that they had gone out of business. They had almost zero inventory and the lot was bare. They are a Bennington and a Nautique dealer.

I have been told the same thing by my dealer. I sat down and priced one out with a thing or 2 that I wish I had gotten. But the numbers still do not line up for me to pull the trigger. Unfortunately the 21's are about 9% more than I paid for mine 2 seasons ago.

They also have no inventory. So if I were to go that route my season would be over now and I would get my new one sometime probably January as the factory is backed up too.

It has crossed my mind a time or two, after seeing what the new ones are going for, to sell for more than I paid. I suspect in a year or two there could be an over supply of newer boats for sale. But,,, I would be without boat for the rest of the summer and any profits would be eaten up ordering a new one. Then I’ll need a bigger Hydrohoist..it’s a whole thing. Think 🤔 I’ll just keep her, she’s pretty sweet!

Here in Minnesota it’s next to impossible to find a boat or jet ski. One of my neighbors had a Mastercraft that he found locally in early July and the dealer told him that he should put money down on it right away if he wanted it. He left the dealer at 4pm and came back the next morning at 9am with a check and the boat was sold. He’ll now have to wait until next year.
