Batteries Drained on 2019 R30 - HELP!

Post by Armitagemke »

I have a Cobalt R30 -2019 model. It was ordered with a "premium" sound system that was not installed.(Standard system was) Dealer installed the Premium system last year that included an additional amp and 3 speakers. We use our boat to anchor and listen to music. Since the "upgraded" stereo system was installed after 60-80 minutes the Rockford Fosgate remote gets a low voltage error (10.4 volts showing on the unit) and shuts off. Dealer installed an additional battery in parallel, and the issue still persists. Time to "low voltage" hasn't improved. Volt meter says both batteries are charged. There is a refrigerator that is also hard wired to the house battery, but when the original stereo was installed, we didn't have this issue. . We are told that the refrigerator and stereo draws 10 amps.... Attached are photos of the battery. All I want is a solution to this problem - want to listen to music for 4 hours without it shutting down or worrying that I'm draining battery (was told that I could when I bought the boat).

1) Interested in other late model R Series boat owners with Premium sound comments - How long until your battery drains when listening to music on the water without engine running or connected to shore power?

2) Anyone who has had this problem - what is your solution?

Have to believe that there is a wiring or other problem - how does Cobalt sell a boat that can only operate without power for 60 minutes?

Thanks - attached is battery configuration for the "house" - we have 3 batteries total - 1 isolated for engine.

Yes sorry to hear about this. So far no one has complained. I know tgrace has used his for 4 hours straight no issues and the boat fires right up. I guess I would take the stereo off the fridge circuit.

Yeah something is up. On my R7 I get about 10-15hrs of stereo use before I have to charge the batteries.

Yes, if it worked before the upgrade then something is amiss with the recent install.
Curious what type of battery switch you are using. Blue-Sea Systems?

I have whatever battery "on off" switch came with my 2019 R30. It's a button below the throttle - one button for "ENGINE" battery, one button for "HOUSE" battery. When they are both on, they are both charging when the boat is running. I don't have a 1-2-both switch, I have a 1, 2, button.

I have the premium sound package. Since my boat is a single motor boat I just have the dual batteries with the ACR switch. When I get to the boat I just turn the switch to on use it all day between running the motor and stereo and just the stereo. Then I just turn the switch to off when I am done using the boat for the day.

Re: same issue - Batteries Drained on 2020 R5

Post by stevea207 »

Same sort of problem in my R5: Underway, I show voltage at 12, but after only 10 minutes of stereo (Rockford) use, I get the low-voltage reading from the stereo, and then stereo shuts down.

What would be ordinary voltage when the boat is "at rest"?
Ideas?
Thanks

In my issue, it was determined that it was wired wrong at the factory. They fixed the wiring and haven't had the issue since.

How was it wired wrong? Too small a wire gauge powering it? Would be interesting to know why it worked for a bit then stopped, and whether it's a common mistake.

I don't know how it was wired wrong, it just was. They explained it to me, but it was definitely a wiring issue. It was 2 years ago.... They replaced batteries, added batteries, did all kinds of troubleshooting and finally figured out that something was wired incorrectly. The dealer did it for me - I'm not skilled in that way. My only suggestion is that you check the wiring to make sure everything is wired properly to and from the batteries and to all speakers and head unit(s). That's all I can add.....

If your boat came with the BlueSea battery switch and an ACR, one battery will be for engine only and the other battery(house) will be for everything else. When the engine is running, the ACR will connect the house to the engine battery so both will charge.

Have a picture of your battery switch?

If it looks like this one the battery switch turns both batteries on independently to their respective loads.

What is the red and yellow wire going to the larger battery connected to?
