Outdrive, hydraulics, u-joints, huge cast iron manifolds, not to mention the parasitic loss. Still rather have an I/O unless I had to boat in salt.
Sure, I can see a bit less parasitic loss. But not a ton. It's not like the motor is at the front of the boat in an I/O.

So I’ve been thinking about the R6 owners claim of top end.....wouldn’t he still be in a break in period on the engine? Meaning he shouldn’t be at WOT?

you can go WOT during break in. Only thing they suggested to me was to not travel at the same RPM for extended periods of time
Cobalt R6 OB "Design Your Dream" page tab is up on the site. It isn't working properly yet, showing inboard options and nothing else. Can't be too far away now though.

I don't recall my break in manual saying its OK to go full throttle long enough to test out the boat's top speed and I certainly didn't break my boat in that way, but to each his own.

Did I say I went WOT for 20hrs? I did not. I tested top speed once or twice but for the most party ran it at 4k for 5mins then down to 3500, then 3k, then up to 4500 etc

I had heard the same Tim. The only time I have had the opportunity to break in a brand new engine was the WRX I bought new when I was 26 years old. I pulled it off the lot /w 5 miles on the odo, I can assure you it saw some hard miles, 26 year old Jeff was not easy on cars. Sold it /w 145k on the odo, was still running fine, didn't use a drop of oil.
For sure break them in as you feel comfortable, and Matt and Chad will come tell me I am totally wrong, but these are not the engines of the 1960's. Varying the RPM helps seat the rings I guess, but whatever, I say Pudgy the Had Down Harder!

Yep Jeef drive them like you stole it.
I won't say what I did when I was younger and road tested new vettes and Regal GS. And Camaro's!
But hey I'm old and your new Hell Cat is broken in before you even get it now though

I bought my boat with 11 hours on it and remember the few minutes at one speed them moving 500 rpm to another....definitely a little annoying but important

I didn't say you did, but the fellow who posted his top speed run on Facebook didn't get to top speed with a "brief full throttle", but rather an extended (1 minute at least) to get to full speed. I was just pointing that out. I have no opinion as to how you broke your boat in.

Just to add to the discussion - we water tested an R5 Surf last year, local dealer was doing a demo day, we said why not. Between Katie and I can tell you that engine saw some time at WOT, and we were only 2 of God knows how many people to drive it that day. Perhaps an outlier, but anyone who drops Cobalt money on a boat is going to want a water test, and if I am water testing a boat I am going to put the sticks to the dash as Matt says.
I wouldnt run a new boat at WOT For hours at a time, course I also wouldn't do that /w our boat either and it has 200ish hours on it, but I can almost promise even a new boat engine saw redline before the final owner sat at the helm.

Which is why I won't buy a demo unless I don't plan to hold it past the warranty. My 2016 Cobalt 210 had 3 demo hours on it when I got it. I saved about 50% off msrp as a leftover model so I was prepared to accept that it didn't get a proper break in during those first 3 hours. It developed a shake after 25 hours - related? probably not, but I traded it at the end of the season.
Forums are filled with people who are either conservative (like me) or in the "drive it like you stole it" club. I guess it doesn't really matter who is right or wrong. If the rings or some other engine parts don't seat in well, maybe the boat won't go as fast or maybe a bearing will go bad early, or maybe nothing will happen. I guess I just wonder why Volve Penta provides a particular break in procedure in a separate book (first hour, 2 - 8 hours, 10 hours, etc.) if it just doesn't matter? Anyway, that's the beauty of personal freedom. you pay your money and you get to do what you like with your boat.

I talk a big game, 26 year old Jeff beat up a WRX engine, 40 year old Jeff would most likely follow the VP break in book to the T...I think...maybe.
But you are right Bob, this has been a debate since the first auto related forum was built on the internet, in the end its a personal choice for sure.

Curious thinking as we sell demos ( Demonstrators ) Here at our dealership.
Does the consumer believe it was mistreated and possibly weakened in those few thousand miles?
It still has warranty and sometimes additional certificates.
Oh bob what was the vibration repair or was it traded in with the issue? Outdrive realignment? Prop? Normal?
