2011 242 Mooring Cover Repair
2011 242 Mooring Cover Repair
Guys,
I'll be taking my OEM mooring cover to a local sail shop to have some repairs done on Friday. a couple of the seams are starting to pull, there's a lot of loose strings inside, one of the buckles broke while tensioning it up a little much prior to hurricane Harvey, etc.
The sail shop specializes in repairs and was recommended by my dealer as to go-to-place. They charge by the hour at $65, but said it is rare for repairs to run over $300. Said they can fix anything as long as the fabric is not sun rotted. My fabric is in good shape.
I plan on having them go thru the entire cover and re-sew the seams, replace buckles, fix a couple of zippers, remount the stern "flaps", replace the straps on the poles, etc.
Anyone have any lessons learned from your experiences?
Other things I should have done?

My snap covers would shrink and get tight at the snaps.. then the stitching of course would follow..
Keep it loose fitting and sew in leather underneath at ladder points and window latch..
If your cleats aren't exposed ask about opening them and having half flaps..
I always put towels over any interior item the cover could touch..

I had our 262 bow and cockpit covers repaired by a local shop as well a few years ago. A good cover is certainly worth the investment protecting your baby.
Our 262 (and now 263) cockpit cover has velcro on it as well. Over time, the velcro can become aged and not "stick" as well anymore. Good idea to have a new piece sown in.

Re: 2011 242 Mooring Cover Repair
I have the half flaps and zippered doors on all the cleats. I'll look closely for any wear at the window latch or windshield. Good idea about sewing leather at the rub points, hadn't considered.
Velcro is still sticky, but since I am having it serviced, it most likely won't cost much to have it replaced also.
I'll add all these items to the list.
I don't think my boat has ever been trailered, so the mooring cover is in pretty good shape overall.

That velcro is some good stuff.mine is like new but my cover wasn't used much. My cockpit cover used like wool on the bottom side. I would use any kind of soft fabric that touching the wind shield. Never saw leather but I guess it would work but make it heavier and cost more. It sure wouldn't wear out.Driller wrote: Mon Sep 11, 2017 6:43 pm I have the half flaps and zippered doors on all the cleats. I'll look closely for any wear at the window latch or windshield. To clearify sewing leather or suede.
Ladders and window latches.. and soft liners for windshield top as most covers have that..
I'm OCD so anywhere a there could be a resting point on the interior vynle I put pure white towels so no bleed through from heat or rain.
I keep our boat on a hoist for 8 months so my covers get a workout..
Ps. I am terrified of red sunbrella.. haha

Re: 2011 242 Mooring Cover Repair
All I've ever had is a mooring cover, but this 262 only has bow and cockpit covers. I think I may have a mooring cover made for when it it's setting over the winter, just to get better coverage. And Matt, putting white towels over the seats never occurred to me, but I'll be doing the same thing now! I had la looked at a 262 last week that had black bleed stains from the cover and it was pretty sad.

That's interesting to hear about the cover bleed thru experiences.Ytmsn wrote: Sun Sep 17, 2017 1:57 pm All I've ever had is a mooring cover, but this 262 only has bow and cockpit covers. I never had any bleed thru from our blue bow and cockpit covers during 8 years of use.
Never had a mooring cover until this boat.
You're gonna love the 262 Ytmsn. Cobalt knocked it out of the park with this model.

Re: 2011 242 Mooring Cover Repair
Walk through of our era usually rests on the rear sun pad.. that's where I lay towels so edges don't get sun burn from contact heat and color that can rub in from sitting wet to dry and towing..( which is always a coin toss)AsLan7 wrote: Sun Sep 17, 2017 3:25 pmThat's interesting to hear about the cover bleed thru experiences.Ytmsn wrote: Sun Sep 17, 2017 1:57 pm All I've ever had is a mooring cover, but this 262 only has bow and cockpit covers. Keep your seat moisture up with protection and cleaning is easygoing.
I noticed new models with side entry are putting cross bars over the rear seat to help the covers drape better..
Just my 3 cents!

Re: 2011 242 Mooring Cover Repair
My cover is back. Repairs look good. Repair shop said it had another 3-5 yrs left. Not bad for an early '11 model that already has nearly 7 years on it.
Needs a good cleaning, but it's back on the boat.
